Guys, keep it cool. This is going to be a wild time for those involved so keep the energy channelled to staying safe and helping others. Not the time for arguments.

The merits of this have been debated a lot of late. The general consensus seems to be that you are better off leaving them closed. If you have them open and the wind starts coming from the opposite direction it will pressurise the inside of the house, increasing the risk of losing the roof. For you to close them when the wind direction changes means you are up and walking around the house, near to the windows which puts you at risk of being hit by flying debris. In a cyclone that could blow close to 300km/h you really don't want to be hit by anything. I would think leaving the windows closed and just bunker down in the safest room of the house would be the smartest course of action if you're near to the storm.

I have nothing to add guys except echoing the sentiments of everyone else .. Good Luck and God bless .. Channel 7 just mentioned the wind speed could now reach up to 400kph !!!!!!!!!! and up to 20 hours to fully cross the coast , tidal surge to reach as far south as the Sunshine Coast .

Channel 7 sensationalizing things a little? BOM has downgraded the maximum wind speed a little has it has closed in on the coast ~285km/h at the last update. To increase the forecast to 400km/h is a bit of a stretch and probably just a slip of the tongue by the reporter.

Settle down mate, im not trying to turn it into a slanging match at all, i lived in Darwin for 9 years, Cairns for 6 and the Northern Pilbara for 11 and all the official info was to board everything up if possible, if not dont leave windows and doors open...

And I have lived in Townsville all of my life.... (and cairns)
The advice was even given during one of the long and drawn out press conferences.

Poor bugger, we're still OK in Ingham, they must hate you, or maybe it's the nursing home and the important people up our road that has us seldom have an outage.

I wish you all the best and hope the effects are as minimal as they can be. The overlay of the storm on the US map is just absolutely gobsmacking

I have been in contact with people from work in Cairns, Townsville and Mackay today and I hope that they can all make it through.

Well with my work (Woolworths) just this afternoon they have put together a Cyclone team to get some people into the areas effected to do what ever is needed. I put my hand up instantly. So as early as tommorrow morning we will be off to FNQ depending on how this storm plays out, could be up there for a week we just dont know yet.

This isn't looking good guys. Queensland is copping it hard at the moment, and I just hope that the residents are able to rebuild. Cairns (and Port Douglas) are favourite holiday destinations of mine.

Good luck and stay safe - the Prayers of all of Australia are with you.

Just some facts.

Cairns has 5 trains per WEEK heading south in NORMAL times.

Extra flights were put on yesterday and today, all out were full, airport shut around 10:00am today.

Georgetown is about 300kms inland, Atherton is about 50km inland.

The roads up here are single lane through rainforrest in a lot of places, one tree down or creek flooded and thats where you stop. There is only ONE road in most places.
Better to stay in a house than be stuck on the side of the road. Thats why authorities close them.

In Cairns we have had showers and a few squally winds but nothing too severe yet, I still have power, phones etc so far.

It will be bad but you cant believe everything on TV.
It will be worse further south.

That's the thing about the size of the eye... its so big Cairns is sure to still get knocked around even if it misses by 30+kms its still on the edge of the eye.

looks like i might be a bit busy for the next ????? days / weeks.
got the word about 3pm this arvo that myself and 2 other guys from my work (ergon energy) depot are to start heading north at 6.30 tomorrow morning ready to start power restoration as soon as possible.

there has been a stream of ergon trucks going past on the highway all afternoon from the depots further south.

have no idea where we are going yet or for how long. as far as know for now we will be heading for mackay and then see where we are needed from there.

The radar picture is the best way to see its direction.
It gets updated every 10mins.
So far its headed just south of Innisfail

http://www.goes.noaa.gov/sohemi/sohe...hirgmscol.html

Looks like it might be tracking north a little on a course direct inline with Cairns. I saw the destruction that cyclone Lawrence did in the Pilbara Dec '09 which was also a Cat 5 cyclone. If this one hits Cairns it will destroy the town and surrounding area. The only thing I'd want to be in is a Cat 5 rated cyclone shelter sunk 2 feet into the ground and achored down by 2 tonne concrete blocks.

Good luck to all affected, stay safe!
