Some of the US comedy shows in your list I would have to agree were very well done, Everyone Loves Raymond imho was more like an English comedy than a US one anyway, very much played out in the "situational character play" rather than the "one line slapstick punch line" comedy of pretty much all the other US based shows, Married with Children falls into this category as well but not quite successfully carried off to the same effect as Raymond. M.A.S.H of course was just a classic and has stood the test of time, wonderfully portrayed, well acted, great characters, perfectly scripted. As for British Comedy dying..........the late 60's right through to the late 80's gave us some 20 odd years of absolute classic jems that will always stand the test of time, it could never be assumed that British comedy could or indeed would be expected to produce so many wonderfull shows again, they were simply the golden years of British comedy. From the late 80's to the present, it has of course been leaner times for British Comedy, and to be fully expected,............ some may confuse this with saying that the craft is in fact dying, but just when you think that once bright beacon is dying out, along comes a show in the true classic British comedy sense that says "all indeed is not lost"...............I am referring to "The IT Crowd",.........get a copy of the first series, take a look, very funny show, enjoy it and then "if you can" come back to me and say "British comedy is overated and dying.".........I'd be surprised if you could? |

As for others, allow me to make a rebuttle. Clive Owen is brilliant, you should see him in the BMW films especially the one with Madonna where he makes her wet herself with his driving. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dSr9bOzOcw British comedy is very funny, although some of it can be a little smutty, Rowan Atkinson though is a comedic god. Look at the boys from and involved in the making of top gear, what a sense of humour to make a motoring show hilariously entertaining - try getting that in America. Most american comedians are incredibly not funny, Michael Richards for example. Robin Williams is a hell of a comedian, see some of him live in NYC and you'll see why; his history of the invention of golf is a classic. Jim Carey did a lot on Saturday night live, like his Vanilla Ice spoof which is hilarious. The point I'm trying to make here is that these are some really funny people that are often limited by a script written by pussies like the guy that did the now axed OC. Tom Cruise is a douche bag to quote the American vernacular, John Travolta was brilliant and has become weird (Michael anyone), Owen Wilson has one character only; "like, like, that's so harsh dude" and needs a good supporting actor to be funny. Mel Gibson has come into his prime in recent years and Payback was one of his best, Stallone has tried to so some non macho roles and has managed to pull them off albeit not as convincingly as first hoped but he did it nonetheless in Daylight. Leonardo DiCaprio is trying desperatley to lose the pussy image from titanic, but movies like the beach don't help. Paris Hilton can suck my balls, and at the current rate with over 2 billion men in the world she should get to me within the next 5 years. Jerry Seinfeld doesn't have to be liked just respected, for the fact that he is one of the only comedians to be funny without resorting to foul language or sex; the mainstays of failing comedians. He did introduce the world to analytic comedy, and from his shows he has made a very successful tv show irregardless of how you personally like him. The rest I pretty much agree with.

I would like to add that I cant stand Adam Sandler (I was trying to think of his name late last night, and got a reminder this morning when I read the thread), and I do also like Bruce Willis. I also dont like that guy who plays Deuce Bigalo.

I actually don't hate any actor, but sometimes I don't like actors that play a particualr role, that they're not usually in.
E.g Jim Carrey as a serious character. Ashton Kutcher in The Butterfly Effect wasn't bad, but I always see him as comedic character. I think actors that have a reputation, for being a serious character, and being watered down to a childish, goof like moron, is insulting to their career. |

I just watched School of Rock with the onset of a cold coming (sweating, constant headaches) and Jack Black just annoyed me with his overacting. No matter which movie he stars in, I can't stand him.

American comedy has NOTHING on The Goon Show, The Two Ronnies, Benny Hill, Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Black Adder and The Office (not the US tripe). The yanks might of busted out one or two good shows, but there is a lot more crap out there. I still can't figure out how people find Little Britain funny though. |

Carl Barron is not funny either. I tried to watch a DVD of his once, he's just a goose.

i much prefer british comedy to american, but there are still great american comedies like seinfeld,raymond,70s show
but british i reckon is the best especially considering how many so called comedies come from seppos that are rubbish ,you get 10 rubbish shows to 1 good one.but with british the odds of getting a good one is better, has anyone seen the show on abc called EXTRAS with ricky gervais , i have only seen 3 or 4 episodes but i think it is awesome ps Sacha Baron Cohen is a british legend that will be remembered for many years |
