I'm 24 and still at home, I had been on euro van tour last year so always intended to start saving once i got back.
I'm waiting for my parents to move out so I can buy this house, I have spent too much money on getting my sheds to where they are, (Hoist, Toolshop etc)

I know I am going to get flamed for this.............. I left home at 16. I have never recieved or asked for any help from my olds. Not even for my wedding at 19years old. I am now 42 and in my second marriage. I have done it as hard as any other law abiding citizen and believe if you are finished your education you should man up and support yourself. My step brother who is now 57/58 still sponges off my olds. He's even had his girlfriends move in and out over and over again over the past 20 years. Because of the waste of space my olds have never travelled, never owned anything nice and never will. They would never, ever complain about him as it upsets him.... He is now really ill, the girlfriend has done the bolt and my poor olds are left holding the can. They are in thier mid 80's. When i talk to my dad about it he just sighs and says you play the hand you are dealt. I know relationships aren't the same for everyone but I think people should think about thier parents first. They deserve to enjoy thier own lives........

Part of being an adult is being able to stand on your own two feet and support yourself. Not sitting at home with mummy and daddy. That is quite sad about your parents, WAForce.

i moved just before my 28th b'day, about 2 weeks before
not for lack of trying, got knocked back on loads of rental applications...wasn't much around. always paid board, and took care off all of my own food/cleaning, so not like there was alot of perks plus i always worked nightshift...so only saw parents on weekends anyway moved out just over 12 months ago, renting a granny flat (converted double garage) in a guy's backyard. all the space a hermit like myself needs, plus its all i can afford without sharing a place |

Moved out when I was 17 and never moved back. Used to help mum out after dad died, including buying her a car when i was 25. Agree that being an adult is getting out and making your own life.

Moved at 18.. My younger brothers were hitting early teens and didn't need to see me and mine drinking, smoking weed and keeping them up at all hrs..
The olds were cool, it wasn't a forced moved but for the sake of having 3 teenage boys in the family home it was time the eldest made them some space...

I am 28 and I am still at home...
But I work 5 days a week, play tennis twice a week, I am out with mates. At home, I'm either asleep or here on the computer. My parents do not want rent - and I offer all the time. My parents want me to build up a base and move when I feel like it... My parents also have circumstances with my brother...I am supporting them. From my experience, many choices we make are personal and nobody has the right to make a judgement on whether that's the right thing for somebody else. If you moved out at 18, then that was the path you chose and I wish you happiness. For people are over 30 and still at home (as some of my friends are - and all my friends work full time), that is their path, and I hope you also wish them the best.

When i was 18 i moved.... About 20metres to the detached self contained flat behind mums house. Had to cook, wash, pay rent, put in for the bills (internet, power). So i was in a way independant at 18. Stayed there till i was 22 when me and the then gf wanted more space and moved into a 2bdroom unit.
Now 24 living in 1/2 of a duplex paying cheap rent with gf. Hoping to buy sometime late next year. At my last job there was a guy in his 40's. Still living at home. Would get lifts to work (even though had a brand new VE SV6). If the guy he caught a lift with wasnt going to work, he would get his dad to take him to work. His mum makes his lunch, cooks his dinner, washes his clothes. I dont think he even paid rent.

Moved out at 21, was almost a fully qualified trades person. Steady job, had my head screwed on right. No regrets

Got booted out at 22 and found myself a 1 room flat/bedsit thing. I wish my folks had kicked me out sooner, it was always tricky trying to smuggle girls in

When I was younger a friend of mine paid some pretty serious board, nearly as much as payng rent on a decent place in the area, but got his clothes washed and food etc.
When he moved out to get married his folks handed him nearly $60K cash (a house only cost less than $100K at the time), his folks had banked the board religiously and handed every cent back to get him off to a good start. My boys will get the same treatment me thinks. |

OWNED i moved out of home when i was 17 and moved from brisbane to melbourne by myself. It was the best thing i ever did, i got bored after a while so i joined the army. i have since travelled the world both with the army and by myself. I saved religiously from my deployments and bought two apartments last year, i'm now 25. I left home on great terms and once i left my relationship with my folks really grew. It makes you grow up alot, some of my civvy mates that are still at home have no idea what its like in the real world. It astounds me as to why you would want to stay at home and not enjoy what this world has to offer. even the simple things like coming home grabbing a beer out the fridge and sitting on the couch naked while watching tv, being able to have mates over and make all the noise you want etc etc. |
