remove the filters problem solved, fully bio degradable.. put ash trays back in cars, put ash trays back in rubbish bin, put ash trays back out side of shops. the government creates a problem then blames the populas. years ago you got paid a deposit for your empty soda can/bottle.. now it just returns this year after a 35+yrs hiatus.

Had to laugh at a guy at the shop this morning when he asked for a bag and was told they'd been banned. The dumb founded dip **** even complained. Must have been hard work carrying his can of red bull and mars bar back to the car lol. People like that went along way to having them banned in the first place.

Yeah, really begs belief. Plenty of uses for crushed glass as an additive to road surfacing, concrete, insulation, etc. AFAIK It is inert so no great environmental hazard. |

yeah, IIRC CSIRO invented a way to impregnate glass with radioactive waste for disposal. It doesn't help the radioactivity, but it stabilises the waste, stops it leeching away.

Ahh, boo hoo hoo. Listen to all the east coasters having a cry.
Don't worry, you'll get over it. The sun still comes up tomorrow. SA went down this road 9 years ago. That's right, nearly a decade ago. Blame social media. People need to be outraged at something and then other people get outraged at the people getting outraged. Fat, sugar, plastic... Society only has itself to blame |

Well most of us put used wrappers etc in a bin or take the rubbish home,BUT that seems to be too much trouble for smokers, they just throw it down where they finish it.Maybe if the Gov put the price up to $100pk,with a 50c refund on butts the problem would be at least be put into landfill. Sorry but you smokers seem to think you have more rights than the rest of us

BUT in a more serious note. I'm so old I remember paper bags when I worked for Coles. Anything heavy you had to 'double bag' or the bag would break. NOBODY complained when paper went and plastic bags came in. Coles did it to 1. save a money and 2. Woolies was going to bring in plastic bags as well. I find it hard to believe in this day and age we cant make an 'eco/price' friendly bag that would work. I remember that a small country in the world brought in compulsory seats belts that made cars cost more. Its a shame that the politicians have lost any 'balls' to make a call on plastics. They wont do it cause we don't make anything much anymore here. All I can see now with this is I will now 'buy' plastic bags to use in the house bin instead of getting them for free (although the cost was always paid for by customers and we are not getting cheaper goods from Coles or Woolies) This week we shopped with 2 trollies, 1 full of goods the other filled up as we left. We then chucked the goods into bags in the back of the car. Just my thoughts UK

i remember when the supermarket had a great pile of cardboard boxes that their bulk product was shipped in.The pile was right near the checkout,so that you could just grab a suitable size box and put the groceries in the box.Now supermarkets finish up with dozens of boxes they have to dispose of every day.Don,t know about other places, but Bunnings here have a pile of boxes for customers to use for multiple purchases

Some facts from today's paper ...
NINETY per cent of global plastic waste that enters the ocean comes from just 10 river systems in Asia and Africa, raising doubts about the overall impact of Australia’s plastic shopping bag bans. A study by Germany’s Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research suggests addressing sources of pollution along major international rivers in densely populated regions where littering is common is the most effective way of reducing the problem of plastic in the oceans. The 10 problem rivers identified as carrying the most waste into the seas are the Yangtze, Yellow, Hai, Pearl, Amur, Mekong, Indus and Ganges Delta in Asia, and the Niger and Nile in Africa. Critics of the move by Coles and Woolworths to ban single use plastic bags say most shopping bags in Australia go into landfill and do not end up in the ocean. Studies in NSW estimate that plastic bags represent about 2 per cent of land fill. https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/ne...64c88bd1358588 Tell me again what the of banning single use bags in Australia will achieve? I have prepared some answer for you Bugger all More profits to retail giants in plastic bag sales Govmints think they are doing sumting to save the planet People think they are doing sumting to save the planet I asked my 10 year old niece about banning plastic bags. She said it is a good thing because it is good for the environment and saves the turtles. So there it is folks. The brainwashing of our next generation is in full swing. At the risk of repeating myself to those that don't seem to get it - the ban is meaningless unless of course you are a supporter of gesture politics - to be seen to be doing something. If plastic bags are a problem then ban all plastic bags. But even if Australia banned all plastic bags it would achieve nothing in reducing plastic bag problem in the oceans because most of our plastic bags end up in landfill. |

Cool thread.
People arguing about plastic bags. Buy a bag, don't buy a bag. Use boxes, don't use boxes. People are funny. Put one over your head or get wet.

The QLD Govmint ... The impacts of plastic pollution on our environment and especially on our marine life are a very real concern to the Queensland Government and the community. It is estimated that close to one billion single-use lightweight plastic shopping bags are used in Queensland each year. While the majority of these bags end up in landfill, around 16 million plastic shopping bags end up in the environment in Queensland each year. This is equivalent in weight to 96 small cars. When plastic shopping bags get into waterways and the marine environment, animals such as sea turtles and sea birds can swallow or become entangled in them. As well as their environmental impacts, littered plastic shopping bags are unsightly, can clog up infrastructure, and are difficult and costly to clean up. The Queensland Government is taking action to protect our unique environment and wildlife through the introduction of a ban on the supply of single-use lightweight plastic shopping bags on 1 July 2018, and a container refund scheme on 1 November 2018. So my question to you Maka is quite simple. Why doesn't the QLD Govmint ban all plastic bags if they believe their own spin? |

That time will come eventually but they (the guv) have votes to win in the shorter term, a total blanket ban now would cause riots in the streets going by what outrage is on the internetz atm lol!
Slowly slowly strategy, win win for the guv & supermarkets, i hear shares in calico bags are about to skyrocket lol! cheers, Maka
