I was sucked in by the Nitrogen thing a while back when I had a car with 17" low profile tyres. I ended up just filling them with compressed air after a while because it was inconvenient to go to the tyre shop every time the tyres needed inflating. If you have a compressor at home, keep checking them yourself. The main thing for tyre life and economy is pressure, keep it consistent and you're laughing.

Feel like I need to fill my tyres right now considering my horrible fuel usage and haven't checked them since fitting over 2 months ago >.<

![]() you see alot of people do alot of things, for a street car there is practically no benefit. circuit cars etc you might see a small benefit. if it's not done properly then there is no point. you need to inflate/deflate the tyres, 3 or 4 times at least to get as much of the oxygen out, get all the fluids etc out. for $30 buy the missus some flowers, there is more gain out of that as it won't just be your tyres that get ''pumped up'' that day ![]() |

^^ Too funny
![]() Seems like the main benifet is holding pressure longer BUT as I'm allready in the life-long habit of checking tyre pressures every few weeks I'll save the money and take my wife out to lunch. |

Nitrogen is more stable, it is not affected as much by temperature change that is why it is used to fill aircraft tyres

Nitrogen just inflates the tyre dealer's profit margins. Outside a serious track vehicle it is won't make a difference - bit like a rear spoiler on an Excel.....

I have to agree with those expressing concerns about still checking tyre pressures reguarly.
I was in the habit of reguarly checking trye pressures on the wife's Subaru Liberty, until I bought new tyres and the tyre dealer talked me into filling the tyres with Nitrogen - he threw it in for free as I was buying some pricey tyres (I never skimp on rubber). As he had explained to me that I would no longer need to reuarly check pressures, only bring it in for a check/top-up in a few months - I got lazy and stopped checking the tyre pressures. Then one weekend, the wife and I decided to go for a bit of a drive down south, and as always on longer trips I checked the tyre pressures - they had dropped from 33 to 29 (kPA/PSi?). Now I check it reguarly, like before.

Aircraft tyres are subject to a little more change of extremes of temperature than car tyres...there's a good solid reason why plane tyres have nitrogen in them...there's literally no reason to put it in your street car apart from to lighten your wallet and fill the coffers of the guy who talked you into it...

The tyre already has air in it, as soon as it is fitted. So nitrogen ain't going to remove it is it? |

Tyres by nature loose pressure. Some more than others. Not necessarily due to these other reasons. |

UUMMM, to do it properly, you need to suck the tyre hard against the rim, which is impossible. Air is ALWAYS going to exist within the enclosed tyre area, no matter if you inflate and deflate it 50 million times. |

Fit the tyre in an pure nitrogen environment.

But, still meaningless, as your car tire wont be effected by the heat variables.. Quote:
What this has got to do with keeping a aircraft's tire pressure stable during one flight i dont know...

If you want to compare to heavy jets then compare it to 100-500 tonne land vehicles. Last edited by flappist; 21-03-2012 at 11:58 PM. |

1) Very low water levels, even light aircraft can get up to 10,000 ft when the air temp is below 0 which would cause any water to freeze and then thrash around inside the tyres during landing. 2) Nitrogen is inert and reduces degradation inside the tyre from extreme temp variations especially in heavy landings. If they tyres burst it is better to not have a lot of compressed hot oxygen available. As the tyres do not turn in flight they are only really subject to the outside air temps and outside pressure. |

Going back to the question, I had new tyres fitted on a van and nitrogen used, now done over 53,000km and tyre pressures have remained stable the whole time, only bothered to top up 3 times and less then 5lbs needed iirc. Tyres pumped to 40-45lbs. |

I use about 80% nitrogen in my tires (that's regular air).
