For year 11 VET auto went to an engine reconditoners. Did things there from assembling heads to full engines, machining/honing blocks, and milling heads.

Both were for two weeks and both were great times.

i was a maintenance electrician and also did pre app in elec, doesnt sound like this is his sort of field (he wants to be an accountant and all ) but now im 3rd year auto elec and going to sydney to represent victoria in the national world skills competition in less then 2 months

I did work exp. at a place called gearhouse lighting. When they existed they were Australias largest lighting company. Don't exist anymore.

Way back when ..... yes we did have work experience back then too, I went to the Sydney Uni Vet clinic. Was much fun, but you did need a strong stomach, they were doing pace maker operations in dogs & we got to watch up close and personal. I loved it.

I then did a week at a local hairdresser. I knew that was what I wanted to do and tried to get something different as I already worked on Saturdays at a salon but the school insisted I do it in case I changed my mind :

I did mine at a sugar mill laboratory. Certainly changed my mind on what course I wanted to do after school. I ended up working there about 3 years later. My younger brother did his at an engineering firm doing drafting. They gave him a cadetship straight after school and he stayed there for 5 years. In my opinion it can work in two ways. You can know what you want to do, and get some work and connections in that field, or you can use it to try something that you have an interest in. Either way I personally wouldn't waste it working in a job you already are doing.

I did 2 lots of Work Experience back in 1990 and 1991.

First stint was at Stillwell Ford workshop in Kew where I got my hands dirty every day working with some of the roughest blokes I have ever met.
One of them admitted to me that he wasn't qualified as a mechanic but got the job there saying that he was and would bring in his papers….but never did….hmmmm.
It was a good week overall and the blokes really had me working, particularly the jobs they didn't want. I did have fun but it put me off working at a Ford dealership.


Second stint was out at (what was then) Australian Airlines at Tullamarine which was a blast. I am a bit of a Jet Junkie and I was trying to get an apprenticeship into the Airlines at the time (didn't know how much of a closed shop it was). I didn't actually do anything but I learnt so much. Highlights included crawling all over a 727-200 (now long since retired from their fleet) which was in the hangar, hanging out in the engine test cell where they were testing an APU (Auxillary Power Unit), plus standing on the end of the East/West runway watching jets taking off and landing while one of the blokes had a scanner listening to pilots chatter….I didn't want it to end.

I tried to get into the airlines twice but missed out (hadn't done year 12) but ended up doing my apprenticeship in a prestige dealership working on overpriced but high tech german cars. It worked out well for me in the end.

No-one has mentioned heavy deisel mechanics either…I considered it purely because the $$ were better….the $$ now are incredible - $20k per year more than a general mechanic

I bet those three lovely daughters and full cream milk are often in your thoughts during monotonous shifts.

I didn't have the option of vocational schooling, but I did spend a lot of my holidays from the age of 12 driving tractors, crutching sheep, wool pressing and the like on a farm. Scarifying a 1000 acres gives a boy a lot of time to think about dairy queens and full cream milk. :voldar02:

Did 3 lots of Work Experience:
Greenkeeping - don't ever do this in Canberra winter;
Landscaping - ditto above;
Car Sales at a Toyota Dealership - sold a new Cressida ;)

Work experience is a great initiative (or it was atleast) and I was offered two apprenticeships & a sales cadet role out of it. Fortunately, work experience showed me just how much I didn't like those jobs!

I did a week at Melbourne Tractors as a Diesel Mechanic. I think they are ( or were) in Campbelfield.

My neighbour worked for them in their spare parts section and set it up for me.

In that week I disassembled an old Ford tractor that they were wrecking and got to drive a bobcat for the first time. I had a good time.

At the end of the week they asked me to come back at the end of the year and start an apprenticeship.

Instead I ended up doing a plumbing apprenticeship closer to home. I lived in Werribee at the time and didnt have my licence (too young).

Now I work in an opened cut coal mine (as a maintenance plumber) and wish that I did do that Diesel Mechanics apprenticeship as there are heaps more job opportunities in this industry for guys with that background.

Iv done 4 lots during my time at school
First was as a panel beater/Spray Painter. If anyone remmbers Peter Olvers green 34 coupe that was in Meguires Superstars i think well i painted the undercoat on his gaurds.
Second time round i was at a Diesel Mechanics workin on big trucks
3rd lot was as a sprap painters again in a different town
And 4th lot was as an Electrician!

I remember that, my old man used to pay a 1/2 a penny a ton to bring hay in from the paddock and stack it in the shed.

Did work experience in the Qantas hanger at Melbourne with all the AMEs and LAMEs. Was interesting. Also did a week at a place where they ended up offering me a job, which turned into becoming manager of a shop for them (it was retail). Worked there for 4 and a half years in the end. The pay was never much better than the work experience rate either!

Is he interested in money??? Suggest a week or two at a financial planning firm?? Chances are hed get to sit on on simple client meetings, write a simple plan (insurance), maybe even get to purchase/sell/modify shares or funds for simple (<50k) portfolios.

Chances are (if he wants to do the appropriate diploma study) this could lead on to future employment in an excellent growth sector with the ability to make a lot of money for himself.

How come all schools but mine have work experience programs??? My only options were to finished school, of to uni and study my *** off. Cant complain though, now a business banker at NAB.

also did a fortnight at a place called toy sports, which was a high perfoemance mod shop in penrith, also went to crane enfield which is a metalwork place, but never went anywhere with that lol

first week i did at the cranny cop shop...i was told i would answer phones and would be lucky if i went out in the car... got out 3 or 4 times, once with TMU (traffic cop) got to play with a radar gun, got to chase someone (sadly in a crumbledoor), got a frantic call from a woman saying her bf had threatened to kill himself and locked himself in his room!

then i did a week at mercury marine in dandy pulling apart old mercruisers and sandblasting with a big machine...it was great

im currently doing my marine mechanic apprenticeship and just applying to be a copper!

See if your son can do something completely different to where his vocational
interests are, such as Disability services if he wants to be an accountant,
agriculture as opposed to music, etc...
Something that may show him contrast, empathy and a more worldly view
of his place on the planet and community.
We encouraged our three daughters, all arts inclined, to seek beyond the
vanity and personal gain, and to experience helping others as well as stints
in business and organisation.
All went onto careers in the performing arts but incorporate community work
and sound business sense in their dealings.

i did all up about 12 weeks at 2 different panel beaters, 2 days for a bricky and 2 days for a mechanic/tyrefitter. all through school in the last 8 months

my brothers about to start doing work exp with my other brother in IT. theres decent money in that feild at the moment.

get him out of school... he haaaatttesss school. lol

these days with tafe available theres always options open. and if u need to go to uni u can actually get into that by going to tafe first. so no matter wat your son decides theres always options out there

i did my year 10 one at a graphic design place, that was the biggest waste of time. they forgot that i was coming basically didnt show me anything.

year 11 work experience was 4 days though and that was much better, i did that at a hip hop shop in adelaide. only because i visited there website once and on it they said work experience welcome. shop was and still is ran by dj shep and we went for a couple of drives to some shopping centres to drop off flyers at some stores.
met heaps of mc's, they taught me how to do some of the basics of scratching on turntables, showed me music production, graphic design works, and i got discount in there store.

so for what i thought was going to be a waste of time and a bludge for 4 days ended up being very interested and got alot more out of that i did for the previous work experience days.

My son has just organised work experience for next week. His father owns his own business (Home & Garden Maintenance) so he'll be doing that with him for 5 days starting Monday.
