sh9t i hate bad news like this

had a message on my phone this afternoon to say that one of my best mates has had a heart attack and died on the spot at work today.

he was a happy, strong, seemingly healthy guy about 44 years old. another mate rang and said they had coffee together last night and everything was normal. went to work this morning and bent down to pick something up and .............

only about a year older then me.
makes you stop and think abit.

Yes the odd doctor checkup doesnt hurt for everyone, even for the fit & healthy there are things that can go wrong, that the doctor will pick up on. Things like blood pressure and cholesterol problems can creep up quick on some.

Years ago I knew a guy who did running a fair bit, yet had a heart attack at 35.

thats right... sorry to hear that mate...
im only 21 myself, not thin but not excatly overweight, and i have diabetes, had childhood epilepsy, and a heart murmur... lol
but it should be a sign to all of us...
sorry again mate...

About two weeks ago a mate that I went to school with had a heart attack and died while at the gym..... 48, 3 kids, living in the US. Yep. It makes you think.

its happening to someone all the time i know but it still comes as a shock when its someone you know.

goes to show that you never know when the big ball is going to bowl you over .

reinforces the fact that you sould apreciate ever minute we have and dont waste it .

Shocking mate, I know what you mean, i have been thinking the same thing for a few days
Best mates old man, who was a great bloke all round, he had tonnes of friends and no enemies, died while having breakfast with the family on the weekend.
This is why i believe that when your times up, thats it.

Sorry to hear about your mate.

Happened to a family friend of ours last Mother's Day. He was 34, 2 kids who lived with their mother a fair way away he didn't see often, swam every day, non smoker, non drinker, not overweight.
Was on the back dock at Woolworths Menai taking a delivery and dropped dead.

They called his mum and sent a cab for her to go to the hospital, but there was nothing anyone could do.
Turned out to have been a congenital heart defect. He'd never had any problems before, and his docotrs had never picked it up.

Only thing that gave them some relief was that he went instantly and wouldn't have felt any pain.

The heart weighs what, - I think typically in an adult 400grams?? One can then figure or appreciate the amount of work required for it to keep an adult body weight fuctioning.

Mother, 83yo had a heart attack a few weeks ago, (pain and clenching of throat symptoms) bout 3am - took 37 minutes for the ambo to arrive (storm time).

A heart attack has 'phases'.

Admitted to hospital for observation and a few hours later suffered, thankfully, a full-on heart attack right in front of the cardiologist and was recovered. Basically, "left ventricular failure".

An effect in hospital, owing blood thinning drugs etc is that the arms especially, can turn virtually pitch black, this fades to normal with time. Several drugs are then required post-hospital - this can add cost, rem.

Recovery is a lot of rest, not to over do things. Depression or depressive like behaviours are expected in patients most of the time, lets face it - ain't fun afterall. In hospital, you'd be contacted by various specialists, including food and mobility folks.

A person can return to full health, or improve on original following a heart attack IF the peron is attended IMMEDIATELY. Delay leads to permanent muscle damage, so if you ever have symptoms - go see a quack or hospital and don't hesitate to call 000 or 112 from mobiles, let em know its likely cardio related.

CPR can help a heart survive damage whilst waiting for ambulance folk etc.

Heart attacks are a leading cause of death in the western world, with the yanks losing I recall on old figures 740,000 souls per year to this, a similar amount again to the delights of stroke and cancer. Road deaths per annum = 47000, Iraq war over three years - 3600, all for a 360 million pop.

Similar pre capita breakdowns apply here.

Be prepared financially, for your families sake, for this event, always.

Its good to stop and look around you once in a while and be thankful for what you have got.

I just got passed over for promotion, again, for someone with less experience who must have said all the right things at interview. I am totally heart broken by this turn of events and have been felling extremely sorry for myself and hard done by.

My wife works in a hosptial and the other night shared a tragic story of a patient only a few years older than me, who has just been told they have months to live for a condition that they have aquired through no fault of their own....just plain and simple misfortune. No-one can be blamed, no-one can be sued. He has 2 kids in primary school and wife and mortgage and will be lucky to see Christmas.

After hearing this story I still felt a little sorry for myself but in a VERY different context. I now look at it that as bad as I felt I still have a well paying job, a sensational wife and two naughty dogs and I really want for very little......I missed out on the promotion but I'm still a very lucky man.

Sorry to hear about your mate Dave. That is young to. I am 46 going on 16, but you are right, it brings home how mortal we are.

Anyway, my thoughts are with you in your grief.

yeah , strange sometimes how it can take someone elses disaster to realise how small our own problems are.

So sorry to hear of your loss. It does put a different perspective on things when something like this happens. Life is too short, gotta enjoy each day but we all get pulled down by stress and work and life in general. Its so hard not to over stress but we all do it.

same happened to a guy at my old job.
spoke with him at lunch and he was fine.
45 minutes later he's dead at his desk from a heart attack.
really does make you think.

another one that really got me:
i started a new job at the start of the year. i drive 30km each way to work in the dark on the highway (12 hour shift).
there is a bunch of flowers on a power pole about half way to work.
one morning travelling to work, there was a VW rolled on its roof opposite the power pole. no one was hurt.
4 days ago there was a truck in the same place that swerved (to miss a cow) that ran off the road, back on the road and off the other side. no one was hurt.
it was this day that i found out that the flowers on the pole are from when a guy at MY work hit a cow on the way home and died.
i am his replacement.

Sorry to hearm mate..Only a few days ago a bloke i knew was bending over at work and died from a heart attack..dont know if it was the same bloke but its shocking news.. R.I.P Kelvin Bartley

sorry to hear.
you can actually buy . heart health aspirin tablets at the chemist for next to nothing . they are about 1/4 strength of an aspirin tablet, and apparently thin the blood and prevent a lot of heart attacks . but who's gunna take em ( i dont ) .
i'm 38. if your getting around 30 to 40 you should start thinking about your heart if your healthy, and if your any age over 18, you should have atleast one heart check.
in your mid 30's its time to make sure you are healthy, in the weight department, and have lots of balance, as we tend to go through great stress from 25 to 35, trying to make our way. after this most continue doing so and some will drop dead.
so after 35 if you dont, then take up drinking , and have some down time, watch your weight, work hard and exercise hard, it's all moderation. now its abiot late to star acheiving something you shouldve started in your early 20's your not going to accomplish this before 50 if you start now, so aim in a differant direction ( less stress )
i always keep check on my health , and when the weight comes , i diet and exercise, sometimes i dont drink for long periods. probably not a good idea. and another thing to consider . i was in the gym on the treadmill, a few weeks ago , feeling fit and doing a fast pace 5km run. a friend came in and said . good lord man , do you think your 21 again , slow it down your nearly 40, after some thought , and reading the age exercise heart rate chart in the gym . i was training like a 20 year old . so now it's more a jog, with a few weights, all things have to be monitored and besides nonme of it gaurantees anything , but does help your chances.

an alternate story :: my mum was born with a hole in her heart, and wasnt considered to live beyond 30. by the time she was 16 science created pioneering heart surgury, of which my mother underwent . then she took up smoking, eating cakes, and donuts, sugar lolloies and beer drinking . most of her life she has spent not exercising, overweight, smoking, eating cakes , fighting with the old man , and ****ed.
she was never sick, untill now at 63 , in the past 18 months, she has had 2 bouts of pneumonia, and now has a heart problem , she cannot walk from one end of the house to the other, without being out of breath, she has been a diabetic for 10 years, and still drinks and eats cakes, they say it has caught up with her and cant raeally be reversed. not a bad innings hey. but still may have cut her life short .
so i dont know what the correct advice is .

when your numbers up , it's up. enjoy, work hard ,play hard , exercise , relax.

( MODERATION ) . and consider your age and where your at, set your goals accordingly.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your mate.

My Dad passes away at 40 (when I was 12 years old) ... he seemed fine ... was very healthy and strong as well ... always working hard. Came in for a break compaining about a bit of chest pain ... he didn't think much of it ... thought he strained muscles.

He collapsed and died before the ambulance arrived (in the space of 10 minutes).

I'll never forget it.

After that I found I have the same condition (which is treatable though ... thank goodness) ... i just turned 30 myself now ... I don't want to pass away at 40 that's for sure.

one of my former staff died 2 weeks ago, aged 43.
he had just finished working for me, was on his way to japan, the night he was bound to leave he just keeled over, massive coronary failure (sp).

on another note, he KNEW he had issues with his heart, yet STOPPED taking his meds.

unless you're a doctor, i'd be listening and doing what they say.
