on my way home tonight i heard on the radio camry.........AHEM correction "aurion" got the car of the year, ford had a couple of coty titles in recent years so does`nt hurt so much, but the gm boys must be chokin after all their big praise and advertising push, toyota is sticking the boots in to the locals yet again

Fantastic. I know it sounds cynical, as I like the VE. But I do not think that any car should win a COTY award due to its profile, and how much money and publicity has been wasted on it.

No car maker should go in thinking that they have shat it in.

Think you will find the VE is much more then just a paid advertising car, It's a bloody great car.

With carryover engine and 4spd trans, maybe the two things that hampered it.

Yes the 180 and 4 speed leave a bad taste in the mouth from sound wise. But the 195 and 5 speed are very much up too the job, And really should be on base models atleast as a option. But with more too offer across the board i felt it would win, I mean after all they have more then 1 engine and 1 tranny too offer.

Back on topic, well, I suppose it's a wakeup call for Holden. Spent so much money on their cars and are still losing top awards to overseas-owned car makers.

As for the COTY, GOLD!

I was having a debate about awards yesterday on another forum.

Seriously who cares, they are based on the judgement of people who have their own oppinions like anyone else.

Holden will care very deeply. Spend billions and being beaten by a camry will not go down well. Means more than you could imagine to the manufactures. FOrd spent $$$$ on advterising campaign around their various wins. Now hopefully will put an end to the 'greatest car on earth' crap. Its only a Holden :

I don't know why they would care. If a person wanted a VE before the award annoucement all bets are that they sure as hell ain't going to change it for an Aurion.

The only valid "awards" so to speak to me are crash ratings for which are based on data not a panel of judges personal oppinions. That's just me anyways.

Wouldn't you just puke if it now did win "Worlds best car" award! Highly doubtful though.

It wasn't Wheels COTY. It was the NRMA's selection for best large car.

Yeah it wont win Wheels COTY, they didnt rate it much better than average, and the Camry isnt as good as the Mazda 6 either according to them (which is what, 5 years old now?).

Who cares about COTY, Holden havent won it for years and they are selling Commdores almost 2 to 1 to the Falcon. Falcon have won heaps of awards (because it prob is actually a better car) but it is being outsold day after day.

Whats Holden going to care more about > selling cars or winning a bit of publicity when they already own the car marketing scene anyway??

From Drive.com.au

Quote:

They'll no doubt spout hours of rhetoric about how the Commodore or the Falcon is a better driver's car. And they'd be right.

They'd probably also lambaste the Aurion for being not much more than a Camry with a new nose and tail, and a more powerful engine under the bonnet. And they'd be right – to a certain extent.

The fact is the Toyota Aurion better measures up against Drive's five key criteria than any of the other three. It is the strongest on Price, Equipment and Quality. It delivers levels of safety – even on the base model – that outstrip the other three.

It is not as roomy as the Commodore or Falcon, but we're talking the difference between acres and hectares. It is roomy enough to fit four, even five, adults in comfort and with leg- and head-room to spare.

While it lacks in low-down torque, it has the most powerful engine and it is the only one with a six-speed automatic standard. It delivers the best fuel economy. It has electronic stability control on all models.

P.S It seems to me that without the Holden brand to whine about, the Pub forum would cease to exist.... just Like locally made falcons will unless Ford pull their finger out give the larger public what they want.
