Wearing the aussie flag as a cape....

does it annoy you when people do?

This has come up because watching the news last night I was disgusted to see people at Gallipoli with the aussie flag painted on their faces and wearing the flag as a cape as if it were some sort of party. Personally I can't stand people who do this.

So you think being wrapped in the flag of the country you love is wrong?? I think it is great to see, to me it doesn't get any more loyal than that. More of it i say.

I see no problem with people loving their country and showing it in that manner.

I wasnt that long ago that there was a big movement to change the flag, but now it seems more popular than ever before. So if someone wants to show there pride in Aus by draping a flag over their shoulders,.. than good on 'em

At an ANZAC day service I dont see the issue.

What I dont understand is when people parade the flags and capes when its not an Aussie holiday(Australia day, ANZAC day etc). Now I love this country as much as the next person but I dont see the point in promoting the country in the country itself. We're living in Australia you dont have to tell me your Australian.

I think its great to see.

But when used in the wrong fashion eg. The Cronulla incident, sadly it becomes a symbol of negativity. But this isnt the place to discuss racism, or the cause or effects of such. Sadly, every young man many hundred Km's away suddenly felt it was nessessary to display a flag as a means of support.

Theres a good article in this month's Rolling Stone. The other sad point is, people tend to see waving the flag and having pride in your country as a bad thing especially when it represents a primarily white, western culture. All racist movements and groups that have united under the idea and use the flag as a symbol aside, being patriotic is a good thing.

What a no brainer thread, the Aussie flag should be promoted at any event and across the world, how UnAustralian not to, display it with pride and fly it high.

I wear the Aussie flag for a cape, two days of the year, ANZAC day, and on Australia day. Rest of the year it hangs proudly in my house.

Proud to be an Aussie, why not show it off when it matters!

Seems I am alone on this. I have no issue in displaying pride for your country but all the people I have ever witnessed (and not just on the news) doing this are the same people who get ****ed and cause trouble. Plus I just feel doing it on Anzac day isn't right.

agreed! although i also agree with EDfutura25, i've seen many people who are ****ed wearing the flag as a cape do stupid things...
e.g Australia Day at Geelong - young guy, cops smashed him to the ground, got to ride in the back... : )

I love to see Aussies flying the Australian flag in public places.

Personally I can't stand people who whinge about proud young (or old, for that matter) Aussies who wrap themselves, wear or paint the Australian flag on themselves.

Perhaps Australia isn't the right country for you to be living in if you are offended by this type of patriotism if you are offended. I have heard that there are few ships with empty backloads heading towards Indonesia!!

To me it's fine under the right circumstances worn by mature people.
When it's worn by dumbass, immature, excessively drunk, shirtless bogans on a day that has nothing to do with Australia or it's history, then it becomes disrespectful and uncalled for.

You can tell whether someone is bearing the flag for true pride or just to be loud and seek attention, the difference between the two is clear.

I dont think there is anything wrong with flying the flag high and proud plenty have given there life for all that it represents, but draping it around your neck,dragging it along the ground then getting trashed still wearing it, I think is TOTALLY DISRESPECTFUL.

I know a Police Station in Syndey that has scored a number of fines (quite large)

1st offence, Flying the flag during rain

2nd Flying the flag in darkness

3rd Draping flag on ground during removal, protocol officer was present for this.
