I have an 87 f 150, injected 5.0 and go 35- 50 k's further on a 80 litres with the tarp on than without and gate up, hav'nt tryed gate down, but a mate with 78 f100 says he get an extra 30 k's outa his gas tank with the gate down, he has no tarp.

Sorry to mine this thread up.
Dont know if anyone else saw it last week, they revisited this myth, and used a fuel flow meter this time to get closer to accurate milage figures, tailgate up, and hard top used same amount of fuel, and they tried a few other things, and the best thing they got (5% better) for economy was a rubberish mesh over where the tailgate goes (they removed it)
