Reminds me of the story I used to get told when a flight passenger saw a guy he knew on the plane named Jack.
When he yelled out "Hi Jack!", the flight went into lockdown |

The whole airline industry has become a bit precious in the last few years.
After all they are just full of waitresses that don't serve anymore and bus drivers that sit and watch a bus that drives itself and counter staff that need a barbed wire pull through to wake them up to the queue of people stretching out the door... I remember recently doing all the crap about taking shoes off, belt off and laptop battery off, sunglasses, no open drinks blah blah. "Who would possibly be interested in hijacking a Tiger Airways flight taking in regard the socio economic profile of the passengers" I asked the flight attendant? |

Yes, flying in Australia was very different for me.
When I was in the Cairns airport, I saw a sign saying that umbrellas must be removed from carry-on bags when going through security. I was fumbling to get mine out of my backpack, and the woman working the line said, "Come on through! If you don't set off the alarm, you're OK." It was nice getting out of the habit of removing my belt and shoes prior to flying.

Yup....
Just read the article.... are they serious??? Some people were 'intimidated'. Lets just say the guy was a girl wearing a religious garment that covered most of the face.. would she have been approached if some of the passengers also felt 'intimidated'..... A few years back, I think it was America where an Aussie girl was escorted off the plane and almost arrested, her 'crime'.. she was in a conversation with a hostess and said the words "Are you fair dinkum?"... They thought she was swearing at them........

A few years ago I was on a small domestic flight in Vanuatu, where most of the passengers were locals travelling between islands. Many of the blokes on board were carrying large machetes tucked into their belts, same as they did everywhere they went!

Wow. I'm literally amazed at what you've written here. In my life I've been paid to represent the ignorant, the uninformed and the woefully-stupid generalists. You however Ugg, have managed the trifecta and ticked all the boxes for the dumbest comment ever. You chastise cabin crew by calling them waitresses. It may appear foreign to you in your own little ignorant world but just in case you haven't yet rubbed your two IQ points together and started a fire I can tell you that the "waitresses" are highly trained and have to complete biannual assessments on their skill sets in managing an emergency situation. This includes evacuation training in instances of smoke, fire and a crash where half the emergency exits are blocked. They also are trained to deal with precious little ignoramuses who talk tough on the interweb and in aforementioned situations freeze in place because in reality they're scared to death. Further, in their training they actually have to learn some basic aeronautical knowledge just to keep the ignorant informed should something like a fuel dump occur and they need to explain to passenger what is actually happening because they can't behave rationally. They may not serve you drinks as fast as you'd like or when you'd like, but their primary role is there for passenger safety and service second. As for your assessment of flight crews, I think you've done for "Stupid" what Stone Henge has done for rocks. If it's so easy, you too can make really good money. You should go out, get a commercial pilots licence and then an ATPL, and work in an industry where you'll have to annually do very thorough medicals (failure would mean you're career is over), do routine competency testing in a simulated environment, loft exercises on threat and error management and CRM, numerous other competency assessments. Then, as with the cabin crew you too can then have the start/finish of your day routinely interrupted by a delay on a previous sector thanks to weather, traffic or other issues. But hey, at the end of the day we're all bus drivers sitting on our backsides watching the machine do its thing. Idiot. That you fly Tiger is no surprise; that you asked such a dumb question would be expected by the cabin crew. I'm guessing the response you got would not have been that flattering and frankly, would have been met with scorn. Never mind, at least she would have had a laugh at your expense to the other crew. I may have been harsh on you, after all, we're just bus drivers who sit on our butts and do nothing. Just ask these guys how easy it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqmomTUVsAw

But did the Inigo Montoya shirt present a credible threat?

Absolutely. Would you allow someone into your workplace who's dumb enough not to realise why wearing a "time to die" t-shirt from a 20 plus year old movie is wrong? Either this guy is a complete moron, a pest, a smart-**** or at the very least, a complete loser like the comic book guy on the Simpsons. Whatever he is, he will make other passengers uncomfortable and as such, he doesn't deserve to be on the plane. You know, the other 179 passengers on a 737 - they have rights too. Put simply, airlines profile passengers and would be stupid not to.
We once refused a guy a seat on the plane because he stank so bad of poo, that no one would be comfortable sitting next to him. We also refuse drunks, the unruly, aggressive or otherwise passengers who pose a threat to passengers and crew. You ask about a credible threat, I ask you how it is not given what has happened to airline travel in the last few years? Not just 911 either, you've got Phillipines airlines and the bomber, United and the shoe bomber, Qantas and the would be Jihadist subverted by passengers - dozens of examples of why threats need to be treated very seriously. You may think it's a joke but tell me, how many other passengers found it funny? Would you put your kids on a flight with a probable loner (again, he thinks this T-shirt is funny, from a 20 plus year old, not very popular movie)? If you say the word "Bomb" on board an aircraft prepare for a federal police enema. There's just some things you should never do in certain places. If you try to make a joke on a flight then be prepared to be told you're not flying, oh, and don't turn up drunk.

I think approaching this guy about his shirt is over the top. Would Mr Terry Wrist really wear a shirt suggesting he was going to kill everyone. I wouldn't wear a shirt like that, but it's a bit over the top to ask him to remove it. |

The shirt didn't say anything about bombs. If it's a threat to anyone, it is only a threat to the six-fingered man who killed Inigo Montoya's father.

Again, I get that you love the film because you know who said the quote in the film, but understand, not everyone loves the same things you do, and frankly given the films box office results, not that many other people loved it either. That's why so few would get the reference. Finally, that someone would try to board a plane post 911 knowing that his T-shirt referencing a not very popular film could possibly raise a few eyebrows speaks volumes about the offending passenger, not the airline.

Bah, The Princess Bride is a classic!
I wasn't the one on the plane. Why are you trying to make this personal?
