Regardless as to whether you can rock up to your local servo and fill your BBQ bottles, or use your Acme adapter to top up your cigarette lighter, it's against the Law.....

When you fill a bottle at a servo from a dispenser designed to fill cars what mix exactly are you getting? Not a guessing game I would like to play
Its not the difference in specific gravity, its the different oxygen requirement of the gases. Propane requires 5 molecules of oxygen (O2) to 1 propane molecule (C3 H8) where as butane needs 2 butane molecules (C4 H10) to 13 oxygen molecules. So depending on the butane mix you reduce the jet size accordingly.

Spot on but trying to keep it simple so people get the idea
And dont forget the limits of flammability between the two gases
We could go on and on and but I think by now the masses might have the general idea that is dangerous to do what the OP was proposing to do

I think we are finished here.
Rules & regulations regarding filling of receptacles other than what is recommended are in place for a reason.
