You should have shut your mouth, even if the 16 year old copped a punch or 2, , otherwise how will he learn to know when not to blab his mouth ?

Like you said as long as you get the money from him theres no point in pressing charges, but if it doesn't work out you've always got that option up your sleeve, and a kid with no priors would probably just get a good behaviour bond anyway (and the criminal record). Nice to hear things are getting sorted.

I don't know if the police would keep something on file, but if you aren't following through with the charges, I'd ask them to make a note of it, so if there's any future crimes against yourself and/or others, then this incident will be considered and hopefully that will mean a harsher punishment if he's stupid enough to do it again.
