Exclamation WTF!! QLD Petrol $165.9!!!

DRIVERS have been urged to avoid refilling tanks for several days as retailers bump up petrol prices to near-record levels.

There will be little relief from shopper docket discounts, which from today will be capped at 4c a litre following an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) decision in December.

About 60 per cent of unleaded petrol retailers in southeast Queensland are charging 165.9c a litre, compared with just 6.5 per cent of retailers on Friday and 43 per cent on Monday afternoon.

"It was quite a gradual increase towards the hike but then on Monday we saw a significant jump and we're approaching the peak of the cycle now," RACQ spokeswoman Niki Kormendy said.

"You are better off to hold off from filling up because prices will stay high for a few days and then drop off very slowly."

Geoff Trotter from petrol price monitor Fueltrac said that he did not expect the discount limit to have an immediate impact.
