No this is not another toilet thread!
![]() The question I am asking is in regards to exhaust systems on v8's. All legalities aside, is it better the have the end of the exhaust dumped before the diff? Does it sound better to you? Are there and performance advantages? I personally am one for dumping on an older ford like an XY GT pro streeter or even a tough pro street style XE as it looks tougher to NOT see the tail pipe out the rear and hearing the resonating sound of the motor off the bitumen from the dump pipe. To me thats sexual! On an newer car its more obvious that a nice tip or something is better. But that is just my opinion. Whats your thoughts? I realise there are some legalities that vary from state to state about dumping exhaust outlets before the diff in a sedan, but not in a coupe or ute. Thats not what Im writing this thread about. I'd like to know your thoughts on whether exhaust dumps are better or not and on what type of car?

Hidden dump pipe on any car to me spells TOUGH - provided you don't have a big empty exhaust cutout left behind!!!

Agree that with the modern cars, the tails pipes add to the cosmetics as they blend in with the moulded plastic bars.
Did a similar thing to jcxr back in the 70's with a 308 HQ. Sounded bloody awesome and no one seemed to care much back then. Bet the BOSS would sound good with dumps, before it was impounded. |

Is it legal ??? Not that it would worry me..Just like to know?
I thought exhaust had to exit behind last seam...

I think dump outlets look tough but as said before as long the tailpipe cut out if fill in . The problem i see with dump pipes is that when you get onto unsealed surface it can blow up dust all over the car.

Well i have a hidden exhaust, so it's kind of like a dump pipe but all the way back. I like it, anybody can't see the tip to shove something up there if you're a vandal, and nobody can see it if it's rusted. Plus as mines debadged when it's parked nobody knows if its an 8 or 6
![]() The rear bar cutout would need a cap or filler etc for all you guys with newer cars, i'd certainly get this exhaust again when i upgrade, but i'd need to fill the cutout! AWC do one?? |

Well I know the next car I get (which will be an v8 early 80's car) may have a dump pipe on it. But is a dump pipe on a car with a single system regarded as worth it or not?

I had an XC V8 that was on lpg. But I dumped the exhaust off after the diff. Sounded good but not the same as before the diff. Had no issues from cops either.

Im personally a BIG fan
![]() ![]() this is my xb ute. The restrictions are, Yes, the exhaust must exit the rear most seam of the car. A ute is perfect for dumpiez provided you can keep it under 94 dB....... Crappy photo i know but, eh...... |

I think in VIC exhaust must vent beyond passenger cab. So Utes can have exhaust dumped short. I used to have XR8 Pursuit Ute 200kw version with dumped exhaust. Looked tuff and sounded mickey mouse!!

In my 66 mustang, I had 3" collectors on the extractors, then into 2 1/2" straight through mufflers dumped before the diff.... a little tag hooked up to the original tailpipes so that they still wiggled around when you got up it... I never had any troubles from the cops, even got pulled up for RBT's etc.....
I plan on running twin 3" dumped on the camaro...... screw the 96db rule....!

I hadnt realised that there was a Db rule. I knew of the seam rule. I know I want to put a dump pipe on my next early 80's car. But not sure on how much unwanted attention it will attract. It will be a single 2.5" system but it will have a hiflow muffler. It just appeals so much, it sounds killer! Worse comes to worse, I'll change the muffler to a quieter one, but only if it's too loud.

I think the rule is 9cm behind the rear most openable window.
Therefore I have the pipes from the 318 in my ute pumping out each side of the car in front of the rear wheels. sounds wicked (10 times better than when it was dumping before the diff, and 100 times better than the full exhaust) 1 problem tho. the people can't hear you order in the drive thru cos it reverberates in there. If you have a good note it's great.

Problem with the old "Chevy Dumpers" which people talk about which dump behind rear wheels is usually they fowl on the leaf springs on most older cars .. except for coil sprung GM stuff ..

Ive just modified my exhaust so you can no longer see it from the back of the car. Looks much better IMO, although it doesn't sound any different, just no more rusty 3" drainpipe hanging out the back of the car :P
I'm thinking about getting a bit of pipe made up so I can remove the rear section (i.e. resonator) and dump it straight under the diff for when I am at the drags...
