Everyone here know what "side" I'm on.
Depending on what carrier you're going to will depend what phones you can get your hands on.

Well, I'm a week away from jumping on the iphone bandwagon.
If you don't want to be like everyone else then have a look at the new Samsung Galaxy S II, From what I've heard it gives the iphone a run for it's money.

Not that it's a bad phone, everything sort of works, it is a very flawed design. The internal memory is so small, that you cannot have many applications without getting a "low memory" warning. Despite having over 3GB of space on the micro sim. It is so bad that the new version of flash won't even load. Sure you can get around this by "rooting" the phone however you should not need to do this on a product. I now have an iphone 3gs and would not go back.

Got the Galaxy S II last week, love it. Have used an Iphone occasionally and like them too.
But for the price, imo the Galaxy can't be beaten (on a $30/mth plan). Can't comment on the Desire as I haven't had a chance to use one. .

Had you upgraded to 2.2 from 2.1? If not then that's why you couldnt save the app to the micro SD. Not HTCs fault - it was a restriction of Android 2.1 fat4d - Are we talking original Desire, Desire S, Desire HD or Desire Z? Out of those I would choose a Desire S - though is it better than a 4S? Probably not but it'd be close. If its Telstra you're looking at why not consider the HTC Velocity 4G, HTC Sensation, Samsung Galaxy Nexus or Samsung Galaxy S2? Those are the hand sets id consider before jumping straight to the 4S.

i myself have a HTZ Mozart running Windows 7 as my work phone (absolutely brilliant in this role) and my private phone is a Google Nexus S (that i recently updates to Android 4 - Ice Cream Sandwich). This phone, although older hardware, has always been awesome and the latest Android makes it that much better again.
My wife has iphone 4 and it too does the job, i just however have always hated the way Apple requires you to do things their way.

I have the Desire S and love it. I had a Samsung previously and found it to be a bit crap and most things, excluding actually making phone calls.
The Desire S does everything i need it to, my wife has the Wildfire S and she loves it too. |

I have the Desire HD and it's a fantastic phone. Even better with the latest Android update! Over 12 months old now so you should be able to get this on some awesome deals...but it does mean you have to go with Vodafone or 3...

IMHO
Choose any (Android) OS over the Apple. Adherence to industry standards and not crippling existing accepted minimums is the key. |

I've seen a video where it achieved 35+mb/s download speed (which is good when the Telstra 4G network maxes out at 40mb/s). And when it launches its only $10 on a $59 Plan....cheap as chips when compared to the others out there (on Telstra ).

4g is useless until EVERYONE has them, since it relies on handset to handset communication for the 4g-ness (technical term) to work.
And first gen is always a risk.

Iv had an Iphone 4 for around 16 months now. It was my first one ever, and I cant complain about how it does its job.
The only real (minor) complaints I have is that you cant really personalise them without jailbreaking them, you are locked into doing things the Apple way or no way unless you jailbreak. Also, EVERY time you do a software upgrade, you have to re-jailbreak it with the corresponding jailbreak.. What a PIA. I had a HTC before the I4 and wanted to buy a Desire back then, but they were Telstra exclusive, and I wanted Vodafone. When this ones ready to recontract, I will take another look at the HTC's again as I do prefer the idea of personalising everything my way..

You might also want to consider a Windows Phone
Android, WP and IOS all have there pros and cons. I have the HTC Mozart and I love Windows Phone operating system. Paired up with Zune (MS equivalent of Apples iTunes store) it really kicks a$$ Wife has the iPhone4S. She hated Windows Phone. So take a look at them all would be my recommendation

Had a Desire Z and found it to work well, but slow in comparison to my SGS2. The samsung although a big screen is excellent in my opinion. Huge screen, great camera, fast, and Android seems to work well with most things. No complaints here.
PS. I don't mind the iphone, but the camera on it doesn't compare to the SGS2.

It runs off the 1800mhz frequency (Telstra) from the mobile towers. How could it work off other handsets? As far as I've been informed that's not the way it works.

I also used a Mozart then a HD7 and loved Windows Phone 7. Loved it but only disappointment was the lack of apps, but that will improve.

What I was led to believe was that coverage and speed will be boosted on 4g phone as they communicate with each other to carry information to the towers. For example if you're in an area where you'd only get 1 bar of signal, if there was another 4g phone in range that had a better signal, your phone would connect with that phone to boost it's own signal. Maybe that's not 4g and is something else..?

Yeah I think you may be mistaken there by something else. 4G runs in simple terms the same as 3G but is much better basically. Now is the best time to be on it because not many else are on the network so there would be virtually no congestion! Its also expanding rapidly and seemlessly changes from 4G back to 3G wherever 4G is unavailable - so there's nothing to lose and only internet speed to gain in the right areas.

Comes down to two things, really.
Simple UI vs infinitely customisable UI. iTunes and iStore vs mounting as a disk drive and market. Loved my 3G when it first came out and hated iTunes. Loved my Desire more when I got it, loved ditching iTunes and loved that most of the apps I paid for on my 3G were significantly cheaper if not free.. End of the day, unless you're going to line up hardware specs, the evaluation of which phone is better is purely personal. If Apple made significant changes to its UI, I'd evaluate one on my next purchase - until then, I'd never go back. |

No You can't save adobe updates to SD no matter what (Unless fone is rooted). adobe and android fault. Android is crippled in that you can't symlink to SD card unless you root the fone, and this means that the memory will always be segmented. Internal memory for OS and apps and SD card for data. Poor design here and that is what has totally turned me off android. Just google HTC desire out of memory, or even "android out of memory". First hint that comes up is: Quote:
