There are not too many sporting people that I really look up to, but he was one of them.

As a QLDer he inspired a lot of us.

We asked him if the engine had actually been called “Seagull” and how that came about.
“Actually it was just call “Gull”, because I named it that. Because we knew it was going to poo on everything”.

he was am australian representitive player and later a selector for the Australian team . he played when it was a different game when it was tougher and the got paid so little they had to work.
Artie was also a great example of indigenous acheivement , he was the first indigenous Australian to be the captain of a national team in any sport

I wouldn't say i'm a passionate rugby league follower, in fact don't even really like the game (prefer union) plus, wasn't even living in Australia when he was at his peak but still a household name..RIP Artie

Artie was from the old school of hard knocks. He used to play for his pub sponsored team up in Redcliffe occasionally back in the 80's after he retired. We had to call by the local hospital a few times in the team bus on the way home when he played. On one occasion we had to pick 4 of our players up from the hospital on the way home! LOL. Great guy with real passion.

R.I.P. Artie.

The man had the common touch. Not to many stars of any sport would play C grade darts with his regulars ( he leased Queens Arms hotel early 90's ). Did not miss a game, certainly opened a few eyes walking into another pub with Artie on your team.
He would have a chat to anyone and it didn't matter if you won or lost it was how you played the game. A legend in my eyes . Rest in peace Artie.

There were 400,000 people in the crowd when the first origin was played, but I am happy to say that I actually was.We sat on the concrete terraces with a ten high pyramid of steel XXXX cans in front of us. We used to go regularly to NSW v QLD games before that, but were mainly there to see the coppers belt the crap out of each other (no, not individually, but the teams playing the curtain raiser). I put that night somewhere up with the Roars Grand Final last year.
