This is nuts!! I sure hope its not some sick joke. To bring things like this back in hardware form & not just an emulator on a normal PC is just simply an old school nerds wet dream.

I never owned a Commodore 64, I had the Commodore Vic 20. It had THREE kb of memory!! It was the biggest selling home computer in the world at the time. To upgrade another THREE kb cost $167, too expensive for little gain.

The kids liked the games. They came on cassette tape which took ages to load, or my wife splashed out and bought a couple of plug in games. These were about the size of a mobile phone these days and the graphics and sound were sensational.

They connected to your TV via a little do dad. I think it was called an RF modulator, whatever that is.

Competition was fierce: Microbee, Atari, Amstrad, Tandy, Dick Smith, BBC, oh and a really expensive mob called Apple. They would never catch on, especially as Microbee, an Australian developed computer, came with a word processor included in the price!!

But Apple had a marketing coup. They offered their computers cheap to teachers. The rest is history.

Don't see the point when you can run them up on an emulator on any half decent PC for free these days.

I've done it a few times for nostalgia reasons but quickly gave up when Workbench loaded. Was pretty back in the day but an eyesore today.

yep, as my introduction to computing i had a dick smith model ...Aqaurius i think it was called, 1.8 k of memory........all that power , but it was a good learner to basic computing or how a computer worked at least, you could type in lines of code to put a magenta dot in the middle of the screen or or make a running man stick figure out of dots , it also had game cartridges for pacman type games ( oops my age showing).

Ahh memories I remember I had a small Tandy computer that you plugged into the TV. I spent a week after school typing in a code that came in a book with the computer to get a square pixelated train to run across the screen.

Last I checked the old commodore 64 was still in it's original packaging. Not sure the model we had but it was the one with the floppy drive. I tried to play it 12yrs ago when I was 15, but could not remember the code to load games. The whole thing booted up fine and read the disks, just couldn't remember how to load them and as I had no net back then I wasn't able to find out how, so it was boxed back up. I remember playing it quite often as a child. My pop also had one and whenever I was at his house I would play pole position or whatever the F1 game was. I always chose the williams car.

Edit: Realised we had the 1541 version.

This just brought back heaps of memories, Space Taxi, Ghost Busters etc. We had about 100 disks.

Never got the card - wasn't it basically a PC on a card..? I had a 500 and then a 2000 and was able to emulate some rudimentary crap through WB and software - but back in ~91, I didn't really care about emulating a PC. My 500 replaced my monochrome AT.

Its a pc with a case.. so its just an emulator anyway.

Plus.. to play the games you realy need a digital joystick (and a tough one).

Having said all that.. I would consider one, for the kids of couse.. especially if you could get an atari.

If you read the specs it is just an Intel atom based PC with an emulator. I still have fond memories writing and debugging code I had written in BASIC, fun times

I'm seriously considering ordering one, and have been since about Wednesday when my mate showed them to me.

They're shipping with Ubuntu Linux, but they're working on their own Commodore OS which will ship to owners once its done.

They're a whole lot of retro with modern ability. They'd be good for LAN, just take the C64 & a monitor!
