Am an RC land vehicle person myself, had a short foray into heli's... that particular vessel still awaiting repairs.
Ebay is good but im sure you know from past experience - there's nothing like building a relationship with a local seller. Seeing as you're in Syd, there's a great store in paramatta - www.rchobbies.com.au for their website. Also check out www.modelflight.com.au Simulators are all the rage now, plug your radio into the PC, fire up the software and get some practice in... might be a good option for retraining? Oh... and watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENcIZVx-o9c

I have been into it for years. Flying is my "addiction" My family reckon that a heroin habit would cost less.....
You will be amazed at how much all the RC equipment has come down in price. The functionality and quality has increased as well. What kind of models are you looking at, sport, scale, gas turbine??? Have you seen some of the new Saito offerings?? Blardy beautiful.

I'm into it down in VIC
i mainly fly scale aero and pattern i want to get into IMAC but i dont have a spare 10K to buy and build a 3.3M extra/staudacher/EDGE-540/Giles 202 ect ect try wings and things mate, they are who we go to when we are up in sydney though i have a feeling they don't have much aeroplane stock anymore. what sort of flying are you into mate? and if your on a budget Hitec make great gear. then update to a Futaba, bugger JR. in my opinion, they aren't as good as they claim. i have seen plenty of models go off the air with JR radios or have bad interferance. the only problem i have had with futabe was with one reciver. it was in a Maestro 140 with a YS140 (the first generation, aka the ones that never run and are so tempramentle its not funny!) due to vibration. we lost the model at full throttle (on take off) and that was the end of that. DO NOT BUY OFF EBAY!!!! |

mmmm, 5 helis, 6 planes (probably destroyed a dozen too), boat, 1/8 buggys, 2 radios, and enough stuff to last a lifetime. But I still want more. Outback jack is right about it being addictive.
My heli's are 2 small electrics, 2 x Nitro 50size, and a 26cc Petrol big muther helli. (1.5m rotor) Planes are mostly 50 size motors and 1 edge 540 with a 45cc. ( it can hover on the prop) You will probably need about $1500 to get into a 50size nitro plane, including a decent radio and the other gear you must have. But you may get away with a lot less if you visit some local clubs and check out the second hand sections in your local hobby shop. But remember, if you think you may get back into the hobby for the long haul, do not skimp on your radio. Dont get suckered into a 6 channel mid range unit. I see lots of people outgrow there $500.00 radio very quickly. I use a 9 channel and it has just enough channels to do fancy flying. Drop us a pm if you need help mate. This is a club in the North West of Sydney Sydney Model Club Go for a visit and see if anyone is selling anything. You also quite often get people selling nitro Heli's because they are too hard for them. E-Bay is pretty good for buying nowadays, and internet prices are way cheaper than stores. John

I built up a 4 channel petrol trainer, OS46 engine. It's had one fly (not by me, but jeez it looked impressive doing a low level pass! That cost me just over $600, ARF (almost ready to fly).
I've got a Hustler partially constructed (on hold) that I bought for $99. It was basically a box of wood, with the plans. So that I don't waste membership fees at the local club ($180 pa) I bought an electric 3 channel park flyer (Electrafun $150). It's great fun, and good to learn on. $15 for a new wing, $5 for a new tailplane! The bloke over the road even bought an electric one like mine, so he could get back into it. Then he spent a grand on three planes from a deceased estate recently! |

Used to fly R/C years ago, this was back in the days of balsa wood & glow plug engines.
I built two really nice aircraft, first was a Hawker Tempest- written off during landing & a P51D Mustang- written off in a cornfield. But funny this thread should come along as a few weeks ago I bought a Parkzone FW190, its electric powered & made of somekind of hi-density foam, so I can re-live my childhood without the high cost in time & tears after the odd prang or two.

wow this thread is tops . great replies . i have been thinking today as i went into hobby shop . no point starting light , you only trade up anyway and cost more in long run . i wasnt aware of JR' problems . i used to have hi tech . i am into sport flying and acrobatics .
i used to build flying wings . supersportstars and had a great 60 size EXTRA 300. you guys are right . you get more value for money these days . the ARF's are simpler and better . the radios are cheaper , and so are the engines . might spoil myself . saw this excelant looking quite big EXTRA 300 ARF KIT today for $498 on special . it said on the box 50 size . thought it looked much bigger than a 50 size , looked at .71cc 4 stroke for $398 . and .91cc 4stroke $498. didnt price radios . but i might try for a cash package deal . never had a 4 stroke before . always wanted one though . the plnes fuselage is fibroglass with balserwood framed / covered wing . i used to love the sportstar 40 i had was easy to fly . but the extra 300 was like flying on a stringline with its sharp response . it would be fun putting it together ( brand new) and joining a club and just getting an instructor to teach me how to fly it . ps i used to be in umac at erskine park , i thought they closed down after the industrial area was built there . there are plenty of hobby shops now around penrith and st mary's |

Go for it gtfpv.... I have a 4 stroke 56 in a cub, sound awsome cruising around.
Also I have been using JR for 5 years now, 2 of them with synthesized frequency modules.. (you can choose any 36meg channel you like with them, so no more waiting to share a frequency). I have only ever had glitching in the radio when there is something wrong with the model. Have even been using this system on my 3k petrol heli. Everyone has an opinion on what brand is best.. But I do agree that Hitech make the best value servo's. Never had any problems with their digital Karbonite gear stuff.

Anyone in Adelaide want to buy a brand new, never used but unpacked electric helo - MASH lookalike, pm me for details. It was bought as a gift from a client, it cost them $250.
btw, have had dealings with modelflight - they turned me right off. Mate in Brisbane can't find a decent model retailer. He reckons they've caused so many stuff ups so he's buying stuff direct from OS. |

interesting that this thread pops up.
at uni this semseter, i'll be working, along with a heap of other students, on a new design for the RC "floatplane" basically a competition run by the makers, and he who has the best design wins, and potentially will have their design sold worldwide including a hefty cash prize..

Sorry mate I can't help you out im down in vic too...
I've been into it for along time, started off with a petrol 1/8th buggy that my dads mate gave me, then onto a gas boat, then several 1/10th electric buggys, then onto a large 50 size chopper(got pics some where) another friend of my old man's gave me..After crashing that I bought a new petrol chopper, 5 or so planes over the years and im now just about finished building a P-47D ThunderBolt, so if you ever need advice on tuning the engines, setting up the electronic side building model etc PM me. |

Hey gtfpv , my father in law flies. He was part of UMAC aswell. I think the flying feild is gone now cause of all the development out there. He has a Chopper now and a V-Tail, and an Extra 300 i think. He still has his Jet somewhere ... Not sure where he flies now, I'll have to ask him.

Funny you guys should bring this up. I got a 11 year old son who tells me he wants a RC plane for his birthday soon.
Are there any easy to fly low cost ones, for a beginner with no skills,. It doesnt need to be able to do all sorts of fancy stuff. Just launch easily, fly in circles over the footy field and land without breaking is fine! I see some electric ones on ebay around the $100 mark. what about the helicopters? Are they OK? Where do I start? Come on guys, help make me "the best dad!" |
