Default Stiff neck / shoulder

Yes totally non car related, but woke up this morning with a shocking stiff neck. Have taken a few nurofen plus throughout the morning since I woke up trying to beat it down but its still there. I also have deep heat on it.

Anything else I can do? Its driving me crazy and starting to make the whole side of my body stiff now if that makes sense.

Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance

A good neck and shoulder massage will make it feel a bit better and get a hot water bottle on it .Sounds like you have a pinched nerve in you're neck .I am not a doctor so take my advice with a grain of salt if you want. I get this a lot usually from sleeping on my neck funny. If it lasts for more than a few days go see a doctor and get it checked out. I feel for you , when this happens to me it usually takes 2 or 3 days to come good again. Good luck

Nurofen will not do anything.

Massage and drink heaps of water!

Thanks guys, I was thinking of going into town (I work at a mine site so not near anything at the moment) and getting a heat pad for it, see if that helps.

Driving me batty, I think I must have just slept crooked and not known it. Come to think of it theres a first aid thing somewhere on site, they may have heat pad or hot water bottle I could borrow save the driving into town.

I was hoping Nurofen might hide the pain a bit, but no such luck!!!

Go get a physio to have alook at it - They will give you a massage and probably tell you how to properly stretch that area for the next couple of days so it will not tighten up again.

see a doctor

it might only be muscular but it might be worse

I had a 'wry neck'
Damn the pain
Woke up with a stiff neck, went for a surf to try and loosen up.. 30 mins later I thought it wasn't getting any better and I should go to the docs just in case..
Organised a lift to the doctors, sat around for what seemed like ages with the stiffness turning to pain.. Saw the doctor about 4 hours after I'd first woken and by then I was a cripple... my neck was so tight it had pulled my head down onto my left shoulder and I couldn't move it.. The funny (well funny now) part was my head was facing to the right.. I looked like some circus mutant ... Anyway doctor sent me to the hospital by ambulance.. By the time I got out of the ambulance, I was in agony and my legs ceased to work without buckling at the knees...
Spent the night in hospital on Valim with a deepheat like substance rubbed into the muscles and wrapped in a towel.. The next night they sent me home and I was layed up for a week unable to move my head or neck... Talk about a freak show, but the pain was huge..wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy..

What caused it? and how does it disable your legs?

it was a viral infection,, middle ear iirc..

I'm sure my legs worked on a physical level, but the pain was so bad my legs buckled..
I had jelly legs, and I didnt need them for a few days with my head joined to my shoulder.. By the time I'd been on valium and linament for 5 days I was 100%...

Stiff neck? You didn't get a Viagra stuck in your throat did you?!! :

Seriously though, be quite careful with it- as was said before, do go and see a doctor as sometimes certain massages can cause more issues than they resolve and your neck is not something you want to mess with.

Hope you get better soon.

I'm plauged by a crook neck a few years ago i had a large air conditioning unit dropped on my head while helping 2 electricians fit it and it's never been right since. And with a lot of low hanging parts/points threw out my workplace i always find myself hitting my head and thus jarring my neck all the bloody time. I've been to physio 7 times in the past 6 months and also 3 chiropractic sessions(OUCH!!) After talking to "my" doctor AGAIN about my neck problems last week he wants me to go in for x-rays and possibly a cat scan.
So heaps of heat, heaps of stretches and a lot of rest is my remedy. Not forgetting those visits to the massuese (She's a hotty) :newangel:
I can totally relate to the physical impact a bad neck can have on the rest of your body, try being on the phone to the bosses at 5:45am telling them you can't come to work b/c of your neck and passing-out in the process from the pain!!

Chiropractor !
I have neck and back trouble from many years of hard labor, when it gets bad i go to the chiro, he cracks the neck 4 ways and i can feel the headache drain away instantly, highly recommended.
