Default Use your Computer for Charity!

Geeks among the fordforums may already know/participate in the folding project. But more help is needed to stay ahead of the yanks. Its basically a small program that uses spare cpu cycles to 'fold proteins', helping research for cures for various diseases.

"Folding@Home is a distributed-computing project that simulates protein behaviour. This research can be used to help find cures for many diseases, including cancer. Installing a background task on your PC allows Folding@Home to use your idle CPU cycles - the ones you're not using - to process this data. There is a worldwide race to produce the most data, and currently OCAU's team is the #1 team in the world.

However, with the Australian summer coming into full blast-furnace strength, many of our members are having to slow their PC's down. This is affecting our overall output, opening the door for our long-term opponent, HardFolding, to take back the #1 crown. At the current rate, we'll lose the #1 position in under 60 days.

The solution is to get more PC's folding for OCAU, and that's how you can help if you like. Again, all it requires is the simple installation of a background task. Then, whenever your PC is turned on, it'll be helping with important research and helping keep OCAU #1 until the winter returns and we can power ahead again. As it's a low-priority background task, Folding doesn't interfere with the responsiveness or performance of your PC when you're using it.

To find out more, check out our Folding Page and our Team OCAU DC Forum. For how to get started, see the Join OCAU's Team page."

Been meaning to get this going for about 3 years and never got around to it.
Given I have 2 computers on 24/7 (both now folding) I should hopefully help a little and, more importantly, help the big picture that is gene research - something very close to my heart for a number of reasons.

just be carefull running this full time, it runs the CPU at 100% and being summer, things get pretty hot. I used to run SETI but turned it off cause my comp was running way to hot for my liking.

This is very true too. Fortunatly I run MBM 5 so I have auto alerts for temp and auto shutdown. My bios also has auto throttleback as an extra safeguard.

Also helps to have 500g of copper heatsink hanging off the cpu with a variable speed 80mm fan

I'd better reinstall Folding, haven't been running it lately because this machine was running too hot (plus I haven't worked out how to get it running under Linux).

It's a conspiracy!!
Your activity on your PC is now monitered for any shady terrorist activity.
Suckers :p

On a serious note, surely the millions of dollars that have been donated to health research has been put to super computers that have been doing this & nothing but this for years.
There's always a sceptic. Jaded me...

Distributed computing can, if it's popular enough, handle computations as well as, or better than, a supercomputer. And it's cheap.
