Sport is more important than life for a majority of australians  Americans care more about great Generals who carried their country to victory in so-and-so war, europeans care more about so-and-so famous artist or architect, we care more about how well someone can kick and inflated pigs gut the furthest :P |

We've become a small clone of the US with most of the shortcomings and none of the safeguards. We have become quite a dumb country in many ways which I think we can ill afford, given that the vast majority of the worlds money, influence and power (the *really* important things) are lodged firmly in the northern hemisphere. I guess everyone has a different perspective on what they think amazing is... for some people it is someone with exceptional physical abilities in sport, for some it is the ability to save someones life against the odds, for some it is someones massive intelligence, for others it is culture (art, architecture etc) and for others I guess it is someone in their country's history which has played a big part in creating the country they live in today...
I guess many things can be amazing and many humans can be recognised for their achievements and skills, whether we like the context or not.

The problem is sports stars entertain many at once and doctors save one life at a time. Not as many people are affected by the one doctor. Therefore celebrity staus (and the money that comes with it) gets put on the people with the most influence
