police today started handing out tickets for jay walking, rightly so.
for too long has the sydney motorist have dodge people walking willy nilly threw traffic. why if they done this in the first place instead of penalising motorist with lower speed limits, and revenue. perhapse the walking public can pickup the tab for the states deficite.

Police regularly book pedestrians at busy city intersections in Brisbane, they stand out in the open in uniform for all to see, but people still cross against signals and get booked.

Had I actually waited another 10 seconds for the light to change, and kept the the 'law', I would have noticed the policeman with his big bright ticket book smiling away on the corner. |

I see this in Melbourne CBD all the time; it is blatantly obvious they are there in uniform and people just break the law without a thought.
These people get what they deserve if that is their attitude! |

I'm sick of this here in Adelaide but it's mostly dimwits on their pushbikes just trying to beat the traffic. No helmet, middle finger to the traffic and often close to the cars. Give these fools the fine and get them off the ROADS and onto the SIDEWALK where they belong.

They should be on the roads and they should obey the rules. Side walks are for WALKERS. Just like they are in the rest of the civilised world. |

About time... had several near misses in the city where people are talking to a friend, or on the phone, or listening to music and just step out on the road and carry on their merry way thinking that if your only doing 40-50 you can stop in time should they get the timing of their walk compared to your speed wrong.

I think you'll find you live in one mate. Vic has been doing this for a few years now (going on a jay walking blitz).

I still don't understand why for being 1KM over the limit we pay $100's, yet, jaywalking only carry's $56? Both could meet the same outcome, death. However, I am glad this is happening, and wish Ballarat would have blitz on it. We have two streets with two pedestrian crossings within 10M's of each other and we still have many people walking through taffic, into a major bus stop mind you.

I see many new australians in my area with know idea how to cross the road safely ,they even paint "look" on the road with an arrow pointing in the direction to look for these people to look but they step striaght out without even looking. now sometimes i cross the road against the lights but look to see what the lights are doing so I know i can make it across safely, most other dopes cross against the lights but dont look to see what the lights are doing and then step striaght out as the lights are about to change.yes there are many dopey aussies out there to mainly the young who have no idea how to cross but the new austarlians "so to speak" are absoltely shocking.
ps. I am just stating my opinion which in this case can be taken as fact. |

No body wants tax hikes on anything, yet everyone wants more police on our roads and streets, I think it's unfair to think the police have all the power to solve these problems, we are the ones that break the law, we have the power to do the right thing, so maybe if we put up and all abided by the law then taxes would go down!

I'd rather watch the police try and manage all areas(as they do now...). They are trying to stop deaths!! Obviously painted signs doesn't work. Pleading doesn't work. So be it, they cop a fine. Wouldn't it be nice if the deaths stopped? Because of the fines? All worth it then. They can still crack down on violence, but they can't ignore the deaths at the same time.

Back in the Philippines about 5 years ago, if you were caught jaywalking you copped a fine AND had to do push-ups or squats right on the street, depending on how generous the cop was feeling at the time.
I'd pay to see that in the Melbourne CBD!
