Default Festiva Starts - Splutters and dies when warm

Morning gents,

This is my first post so advanced apologies if I'm missing any rules etc - let me know!

Vehicle: 1997 5D 5sp Manual Ford Festiva GLi - 226,000km

Strange issue that began Friday just gone in Melb during the heat..

Friday arvo driving home from work my overflow bottle somehow work itself up and off the clamp on the battery and splattered ****** murky water everywhere, although this caused no issues I got home and the temp didn't budge at all. I did a clean up and got everything back in after washing the bay and started her up, no issues, until after 5mins when it got to normal running temp it spluttered and died and would not fire again.

I left it over night, tried again on the Saturday and same issue. I thought maybe some water was in somewhere and moving around once it heated. So i left it for another day, and same problem still occurring... Runs for 5 mins and splutters + dies.

I'm now under the assumption this is a completely separate problem to the overflow bottle splattering and a coincidence. I don't have a workshop manual and don't know this engine too well myself. All I can think of at this stage would be a fuel filter issue or vac somewhere, but checking if anyone has some insights or experience I can lean on before pulling things apart... !

Thanks in advance,

Dave

water bottle contents cooler than engine bay parts ..could be any thing in the engine bay the water hit

repair manuals for these can be found on ebay

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1991-97-F...UAAOSwcdBWRT9e

check for fuel then check for spark ..... will be one of those two causing the breakdown

some possible fixes

spark loss

crank angle sensor -- pour water over the unit when hot ..see if it starts up

a coil failure

check the leads and plugs

fuel loss
if you have no fuel at the injectors
fuel pump relay
fuel pump
fuel filter

if no better have to do more checks

idle control valve/ clean the throttle body/ a maf clean

Thanks mate!

Update on the issue:

1. Found water in the dizzy cap, clean this out and the rotor.
Afterwards it started fine still and got to running temp then started surging instead of stalling / not starting. Also has a miss when you try the throttle.

2. Changed oil and filter:
This caused it to get to running temp again and hold it for 15mins before it started surging with and still a miss.

I've got a new fuel filter which I'll change soon and retest, then I'll start going over the above suggestions, less my new symptoms spark any new thinking?

you have made progress

still not fixed
surge and a miss is spark or air/fuel related

do a compression test if it the motor running doesn't get better

All fuel, air and spark related components now tested and all working fine.

After some time of running it's now cleared itself up - assuming water in somewhere as I replicated the problem after cleaning the engine bay with all the same systems and same timeline to clear up.

HOWEVER, now I have an overheating problem after doing a radiator flush and radiator cap change. Off to check the thermo and water pump...

In my next post, I'll start listing the things i'd rather be doing over the Christmas break

Thanks for the help so far!
Thanks for the pointers!

these motors /heads cant take too many boil overs

faulty thermostat
the fan thermo switch faulty
old soft hoses
thermo fans not spinning fast enough due to age

the water pump fins /corrosion
