Consonant or Constanant

i was taught Constanant (Melbourne School)
wife was taught consonant (South Aus School)
kid gets taught Constanant (Melbourne School)

i do a google search, not many hits on Constanant but they do exist but Consonant is more popular

meanings the same for both words (a letter which is not a vowel)

are they both right??

Consonant is correct, i don't believe the other options are even words.

Although I have heard many other people using the other derivation

Much like people who actually say Valentime's Day instead of Valentines Day. Have heard many people do this....strange but true

I agree,symomims (instead of synonyms) etc i looked in my kids book,he wrote the questions off the board and all 3 times she had used "constonant"...

It's just slack pronounciation that no one's ever corrected.
The same as people who pronounce three as 'free', or bought as 'brought'.

I would have pointed it out to my teacher at school, and then been given detention for being a smarta**.
It happened every time I pointed out that the substitute teachers were pronouncing my name wrong, though I knew it was spelt correctly on the roll.

My Dad would have (and still does) correct me, if I pronounce something wrong - and I'm 26. But at least it's stored away for future reference, and then I'm slightly less likely to come across looking like an idiot.

XW_GS, no offence mate but as soon as I read what you said how to pronounce it, I said Victorians... both my parents were, so they use to regale SA bods with weird ways of saying, theatre etc

I think it depends on where you come from. My parents are Scottish and whenever I said 'haitch' my mother would almost tear my head off. So 'aitch' was drummed into me. 'haitch' is the Aussie version.

Easiest way to test is to determine which one sounds right...

'An HSV' or 'A HSV'. I can't say the second one without it sounding completely wrong.

The OP - I was always taught consonant, never heard of constanant.

My most hated and most often mis-spelled or misused word is loose, but I won't loose any sleep over it.

Since HSV is an Aussie make and not Scottish, its probably correct to call it haitch SV. Even if the "proper" pronounciation is aitch.

I agree, my grandmother is very old school english and if I dared pronounce aitch as haitch, I would cop a very long lecture, I now do the same with my own kids though.

And as far as I know it is definately consonant and vowels, not constanants, I will check my son's schoolbooks to see if new teaching methods contradict this.

Unfortunately today society is rather "loose" with correct grammar, but I also will not "lose" sleep over it LOL

My pet hate is the over use of apostrophes. So many people use them for pluralising words (look at all those Falcon's), but they should only be used to denote ownership, or abreviation (ie, The Falcon's tail light (Falcon owns the tail-light), that Falcon's pretty fast (abbreviation of "Falcon is").

My opinion is, if you don't know how to use an apostrohe, then please don't.

Also - brought = past tense of bring. Bought = past tense of buy. Quite different.

I taught in primary school classrooms and I can tell you that I reckon standards are falling...fast!
My fellow aspiring teachers had no idea what an apostrophe was or when to use it.
Basic words were misspelled.

For my own sanity, and perhaps the kiddy's too, I ran far, far, FAR away from that occupational avenue, even though I only had one semester left.

I hate the word " remuneration " shouldn't it be called renumeration as it refers to pay. in a numeral sense.

Although “remuneration” looks as if it might mean “repayment” it usually means simply “payment.” In speech it is often confused with “renumeration,” which would mean re-counting (counting again).

Just for the record, and possibly slightly more relevent to the forums. The round plugs that plug the side of your engine block people are called 'WELCH' plugs, not 'WELSH' plugs.

MY grandson gets very upset when i try to correct some of the silly things His Teacher in grade 2 tells the class,Some of the things this young Lady tells the Kids is astounding,
Its a bit unfair on the Younger generation to be angry with them when they are in classrooms with Teachers who cant spell or Pronounce correctly.
The standards are definatly going down at Uni.
well i am not the best at grammer ,and only made a C average in High School i honestly think i have a much better standard than half the Teachers of today

To be fair, I've been here for about a year and this is the first Grammar Nazi thread I've seen.

Another one that bothers me no end is "should of" instead of "should have".

Also, people who write as if they are texting. Are they really in that much of a rush? In my opinion it shows disrespect to the readers and it's often very hard to interpret what they are actually trying to say. It's hard enough to read alot of the illiterate rantings here already, without text-speak in the threads as well.
