Default Why do we mod?

So here's a question: what makes us mod our cars? Why did you get started? What do you get out of it?

If you'd have asked me a month ago would i want to mod my car i would have said no, but now i've painted the rims and calipers, i'm about to upgrade my brakes and thinking of fitting a catback, it seems to be a slippery slope.

I think in part for me it's due to a lack of job satisfaction at the moment and it gives me something positive to channel my energy into.

I think for me its cause I may have a screw loose... well it feels like it when you look at the money spent on a perfectly functioning car.

Otherwise its cause I need some way of dealing with all the sad stories of all the youth I work with. Not to mention that I want my car to be more like an extension of me.

It's something that I have pride in driving it, because i've achieved a lot of stuff I never thought I could....

It gives me the feeling of satisfaction that i've achieved, and gone beyond my goals and what I thought I could do.....

My XR5 lasted 9 days after driving it off the showroom floor and they arent very basic mods ie tune etc aswell. Also in my car group (XR5) there is many owners doing many different things not to mention the guys all over Europe so there is plenty of ideas getting around for us aswell.

That's quite a hard question for me. I don't drink or smoke, so I have nothing better to spend my money on and I absolutely loves cars in general. What I get out of it is I get to walk out into the carport, see my car, and think - 'that's mine, all mine'

Because I have delusions of grandeur?

My modding extends to pretty much just tacking on various Fairmont bits here and there though, factory upgrades basically. I'm too much of a tight wad to spend bucketloads on rims, tyres, exhaust etc. A car is just a machine after all, I'm not bothered if mine isn't the best looking or sounding.

In the past I've always favoured modding cars that no-one else would touch with a bargepole, but I guess it's all about individuality - whether that's apparent or not, a car may appear standard on the outside....
With my AU1 it's a bit different tho, I'm constrained by a very tight budget, so I guess the aufalcon.com stickers will be the high point for a while yet, I think the XR6 Turbo motor + Territory 4x4 drivetrain setup will have to wait awhile (possibly forever!)
I'll always be forever impressed by the handling of the Ford Scorpio 4x4 I owned years ago, and would love to see something built along the same lines but with a proper mental-powerful engine

Since I have owned a variety of vehicles over the years I have always modded them in some way and I believe the reason for this is that rules are meant to be broken. There are too many rules and regulations these days that say we cannot do certain things and the only place we can is under the hood and shell of our cars and in most cases get away with it,

I think it's mainly because car companies don't build vehicles for individuals but for broad chunks of the community. As much as we try to narrow down the type of car that suits our lives there are always things that we'd like to change. So we change them!

Well today we had 12 Focus RS' being modded in the same place, along with another 2 or 3 sending their ECU to be fiddled with. One of the cars was 3 days old.

i beleive the reasons we mod are as varied as the people doing the modding. for some it's the performance or functionality aspect, while for others is an expression of style, or a mix of these.

personally, i mod to create 'my' car... for me there's nothing worse than going to a show where all the cars are the same, just different colours. add to this the personal satisfaction of doing as much of it myself.

also, it sure as hell beats doing housework!!

I modify cars for the following reasons.
Power gains = more fun.
I like to add my own "style" to the car instead of being plain and boring.
Adding features that makes the car "better".
