Hi Team....
Had a few noises and groans from the AU in the past but nothing like this, this time the mechanic shrugged his shoulders so any advice appreciated... We were out and about the other day in country and I was finding that coming down a windy hill and braking into a left hander I would get a clunking noise from the left hand front wheel or side and I swear I could feel it translating thru the brake pedal... am going to another mechanic but thought I would ask you all knowing ones first, if anyone has had similar ( bearing done recently too ) Cheers KIWI ( novice when it comes to repairs ) |

welcome to the forums.
i did get that until i replaced the factory rotors and pads with rda slotted rotors and rda pads, i don't get it anymore, sorry i can't shed anymore light on it, oh by the way mine is an au1 forte... |

Ball joints...?? is this something I could spot myself as the mechanics locally are just zero help at this stage, and it's a huge hassle to keep going back to them... a pointer in the right direction would be a huge help...

afaik ball joints need to be pressed out/in, so unless you can get access to a pressing machine i'd say not

jack the car up.. get a mate to help
one of you wiggle the wheel(as in wheel and tyre not steering wheel) up and down.. then side to side this will also reveal any tie rod issues or wheel bearings etc the ball joint looks to require pressing out (just looked at a photo of mine)

Yeah I have to agree. I got the lower balljoints in mine replaced with the same "clunking" problem. Problem solved although it was $200 bucks later. My understanding is that they need to be pressed into place so you need the right gear. Also get the mechanic (or you if your that way inclined?) to ram a pile of grease inside the boot...it will help it last a bit longer next time.
