Default Tappet noise in WS

Hi folks,
My daughter has a WS '09 LX manual.
The tappet noise is way bad when cold and still noisy when hot.
Is this normal?
Are the tappets self adjusting?
If not, are they easy to adjust?

Hi Cespenar,

As far as I know the tappets are hydraulic and can't be adjusted like the old types. If they are hydraulic the way to adjust them is to put shims in, which involves a lot of mucking around and you really have to know what you are doing. I also have a WS and it also sounds like a diesel in the morning... I think the only way you are going to find out is (a) listen to another WS or two and compare, (b) ask a mechanic to check it out on the next service - but not to touch it without checking with you first.

cheers, Paul

What about trying a different brand of oil and try some other fuel.

Oil and fuel would be the cheapest and easiest start I reckon. Our WS is noisy sometimes in the cold, other times you cant tell its running....

Yes I have the same problem, fought long and hard with ford over this, all overhead cam engine these days have what's called hydraulic lifters and sometimes you can get a noisy lifter, tick, tick, tick ect what ford are saying is the posts that hold the hydrauilic lifters have shims under them and they need to be adjusted and because they class it as an adjustment it does not come under warranty, cost is around $1000.00, and yes the tappets on modern cars are self adjusting, not like the old days where you used a screwdriver and spanner and feeler guages.

regards

keith

Oil is Ford spec. More than one brand has been used.
Fuel? In Dubbo, I've been told that the road tankers take it from the same rail tankers. Maybe it is all the same here.
Thanks anyway.

Are the noises level or are some louder ?
My daily makes some ticking when cold but by adding some Lucas product it stopped , perhaps an additive might do it at the next oil change ?
