Question Drift Racing?

Hmmm

A sport they call it?

An art some say, but its taking off like there aint no tomorrow!

What are your thoughts on the subject of drift racing?

I personally see nothing in it. Certainly not racing. I would consider more of an exhibition than legitimate racing.

Is there a point to it? Oh wow they delaminated a tyre, exciting huh.

I guess the one advantage is it may thin the rows of rice that create a constant annoyance and aural cacophony at the street meets.

I reckon its one of those things that are fun to try but crap to watch. Like 10 pin bowling or something.

I wouldnt mind giving it a go.

i was watching a doco on discoverey channel about it, and theres one point they make, drifting is like the X-Games of motorsport, like olympics, they have bike races, and X games is jumping and tricks,

I've heard that there is more interest in the future for drifting versus world rally.

Where is this interest from? Michellen, and others.

My brother's all for it, he loves the rush. For him it's more like an addiction :P He's nothing pro, but any chance he gets he'll adjust bits and pieces on the car bias to drift, and then find some windy hilly roads to let fly.

He's written off a few cars hahaha. Never any personal injury though, and never hit anyone else... just... stationary roadside objects. Scares the sh!t out of me when he drifts a corner.

Toyo are sponsoring it. You gonna do that to a tyre you may as well start with BJ Aussie Almost Rounders.

It is only new here, but the development of the drift cars in Japan is nothing but incredible. The drivers have skill levels that guys over here only dream about.

Can be fun to watch. Not my cup of tea. I hardly think it is a comprtitive sport when the winner is judged on style rather than a hard and fast speed or time at the end of the track.

I think it's a hoot to watch

The ricers are the main players but watching an in-car camera of a highly skilled driver is amazing...so calm while getting sideways at 100+km/hr

CAPA have tipped in a fair bit to an LS1 ute that is doing this season of drift with a 800Hp beast that got 4th in its 1st outing. The vids put up on the website are fantastic

Its will NEVER be racing. Racing requires a definitive timing device but drifting doesnt follow this. It'd be like calling Burnouts "racing". Its not.

Saying this, it can be good to watch. AE86's are the worst ever cars for it, not sideways enough and not enough smoke.

See thats the problem, i may look at some bogan VB 308 commo sideways, making bulk noise, and shreading the tyres in 4th gear and pouring smoke everywhere and say that is way better than a balanced sideways AE86, but others may not see that.

Subjective past times can't be classed as racing.

Drift in aus is not drift, The D1 cars in japan have 500+kw's and are near 100%carbon fiber bodys & they still chuck them around like mad.
I think its a top sport, and its nuts to watch that japan stuff!

well racing is when ur trying to beat an opponent in a car right? drift racing is all round a track while a 1/4mile is a straight line. id prefer to watch driftn then a drag strip (although i like both). yes both r racing its just a diff type. sum of these jap cars have a shit load of power and are VERY fast.

i mean u just have to watch a JDM race on a circuit to see that. they handle amazingly and gun it into corners (most without lock up). as far as destroying tyres. well u do that doing burnouts aswell and ppl still go for it. at least its sumthn other than staying in one place letting it rip and takes more skill.

if u see a crazy *** drift race u would notice a shit load of smoke aswell. also sum of these cars with diff setup r just as fast on the dragstrip aswell.

Drifiting to me is amazing, they can pull off the most intricate movements at crazy speeds...i don't see how it could be classified as anything but a sport...i mean yeah it's not a race, but a display of skill and accuracy, which is just as exciting and takes the same amount of concentration and skill that getting around a circuit does.

I was watching the doco on discovery last night about the D1 drifters etc. I loved it, trying to drift as close to your opponent as possible, geez that would take some skill.

I'd love to give it a go one day at a proper track, would be heaps of fun.

B2TF, probly cause ya can't drift an auto focus. ;) jk.
