What's wrong with bush mechanics. Remember the coke can oil catch can - ingenious (not safe, but it did the job). If people didn't try something different, we wouldn't have light bulbs, or motor vehicles, or nuclear weapons (what "genius" thought to try and split an atom?!?). Ok, I know that's all a bit of a stretch. Maybe he just had nothing else to plug the hole with?

On a serious note, has anyone tried the magnetic sump plugs on ebay? They apparently catch and hold any metal fragments in the oil (I presume ones that escape from the filter). Would be interested to know if they actually work, but I'm sick of being a guinea pig (sucker??) with these things, lol.

Yeah for the one in the sump, go one heat range cooler and set the gap to 1.3mm.

Gotta admit... looks like it's doing a good job

Don't know if its stupid - don't know the circumstances. I mean if your stuck somewhere, lost the plug, and you have to use something - anything to get mobile, why not?

problem is if you lost the plug while driving, the oil would be long gone before you could put a spark plug in there. How many ppl carry 5litres of oil in their boot with them....

If they managed to lose or strip the thread of their sump plug in their own driveway and had nothing else to use it's a bloody great idea, if not then they are bloody insane.

I'd rather drive a car 1cyl down than drive a car with no oil.

Wow. Did it work good? Thats pretty funny. Be handy to carry a spare sump plug I guess, but then again, it would be handy to carry a spare everything.
