Holden would have to be worried that their grand plan of fobbing all the redundant Us Pontiac panels onto the Aussie cars hasn't paid off.

They still can't seem to give them away,I know of a couple of people that actually paid a little extra for an 09 model SS so they didn't have to have, that ugly front end ( their exact words).

When I was asked by a Calais v buyer what my better performing and better all round G6E t cost he nearly fell over 15k less than that fool was prepared to pay to Holden. LOL

Agree with the comment about the Cruze. If that's build here, then there goes #1 manufacturer in a flash.

It looks like Broadmeadows is on track for about 60,000 vehicles this year,
that's a good lift after last year's depressing number (53,000).

Is the jury still out on that re Cruze to be built here? Holden released that news with alot of fanfare to take the gloss of the Focus but since the latter has been canned, not much has been heard.

Someone on here suggested that the first Cruze has gone down the line. Wether that is correct, only time will tell, unless someone can confirm one way or the other.

Really I have no idea on whether it will be a success or not, or the profits involved.

Labour is only a small portion of an overall cars build costs, its the economies of scale which makes or breaks viability. You can get European and Japanese cars in Australia for about 16 grand, and they have much higher wage costs than Australia.

I have feeling the Cruze is more about making local production viable for Commodore than it is about making mega bucks. A consistent 30,000 Cruzes a year being pumped out of Elizabeth will give a consistent production base for Holden to focus making the Commodore a higher-margin sports/luxury sedan/wagon and for it to chase more speculative export contracts.

Holden must be hoping the Aussie dollar continues to fall (due in part to the proposed mining super-tax) with upcoming exports to the US and local production of the Cruze.

Good point.
One to ponder though is that @ 30,000 cars a year the market is nowhere big enough for the 600mil - 1 billion needed to set up the tooling and production. It would take over 10 years to amortise costs and financiers wouldn't be too keen to lend the money in a volatile market such as this predicated on shocks from lending scams throughout the USA and EU.

Well done to Ford Aus on the local cars, but have a look at the total sales, Holden up 29% to Fords overall 7%. I can understand the popularity of the Cruze but why is the Captiva doing so well especially against the Prado???

Ford just seems to have trouble cracking their imported model segments for some reason. If they were able to do better in these other segments, their overall market share would be right up there and giving Holden a run.
