Default Need help finding engine No.

Hello All
I have a '72 Capri 1600 it has a 691M block I am having trouble finding the engine no. .I have 2 spare 681 blocks & the no's. are punched into the block just above the oil gauge outlet it is not there on the 691.One suggestion was that it could be on a machined shelf on the top but there is no marks there either.

Does anyone have any other suggestions, this was one only 4 problems for a blue slip but seems to be the biggest if I can find this I will be on the road in a couple of weeks HELP

Thanks for that, but the block (it is a 691M block)must have been decked &the number taken with it ,I have 2 other 681F blocks the same ,I draged one out into the sun the other day & went over it with a magnifing glass in the end I gave up when I went to put it away I noticed a mark above the hole where the oil guage comes out one engine no.,checked the other block the same may be it is a secondary stamping spot? no idea, the only trouble is there is no markes on the engine in the car :evil3:,but thanks for your help it is appreaciated.

Acid or X-ray depending on the metal thickness where the number is stamped. You may need a police number but you will have to show the history of the motor

get the number stamp out, and stamp it the same number as your spare engine...

Know you will all be as excited as I am or not,I spent the last 3 days trying to apply an engine no. to the block of the Capri today after 3 attempts at various engineering shops and 1 by myself I stumbled across the number covered in oil and crap on the front of the block above the fan almost impossible to see. :
