Default Threats to de-register car because of takata airbag

My daughter and her partner have a 2010 Nissan Patrol.
He received a letter some time ago saying that it's been recognised as not having the air bag fixed under the recall.

He has tried several times and the local dealer (they live in the Kimberley of WA) keeps saying they can't get one and it's on order.
Last week they got another letter from Transport saying car is to be de registered on September 19th (or something) unless he provides a stat dec saying it's been done.

The local car dealer is providing them with a letter to say it's on order.
So naturally they're really concerned, like all of us, they need their car.
Has anyone else had a similar issue and did they extend the dead line?

Seems a bit harsh although they have known for 3 years or more that the airbags have to be changed.Maybe they thought it would just go away.I thought all states deregistered cars that hadn’t had them changed a long time ago

Threaten to park it at the dealers until it’s done, and insist on a loan car. I know Honda was buying back cars it couldn’t fix.

Yes I think you're a bit correct there. He's one of those guys that will get around to it.
Although, he says he's been trying for nearly 12 months.

Go one better, get a dealer loan car and have yours transported to a dealer in a city that can do it, pretty simple fix!
But have the dealer you purchased it from do it all, not your fault!

The dealer letter should be enough to postpone it. Why the local dealer can’t get airbags is a bit of a concern. Surely they’ve replaced the bags in the past. I’d hate to rely on them to get parts in when your car brakes down

Probably a case of the manufacturer taking their time because they don't want to do free **** they're obligated to, maybe waiting on a manufacturing run which is causing dramas for the dealer trying to get stock.

It'll be something like Nissan Japan waiting on Takata and Nissan Australia waiting on Nissan Japan to get stock.

Mercedes copped a huge fine for this practice, https://www.accc.gov.au/media-releas...pulsory-recall

I had to wait a year for airbags for our C180 coupe, they kept telling us there was no stock, wasnt until I blew up at them and told them I was billing them for a rental car until the airbags were replaced that they became available the following week.

Just tell them to contact the ACCC and make a complaint against Nissan

You should be elevating the matter and contacting Nissan Australia directly, to push things along with the dealer.

I dont think he is trying very hard, my mate recently bought a 2007 patrol in Melbourne, couldnt get it registered till the recall had been done, called on Friday, airbag replaced at the dealer Tuesday, easy.

He needs to try harder.
We had cars on the books for years that needed the recall done. We’d call them, text them, email them and book them in. It was all recorded so if they were KILLED by them we couldn’t be held responsible.
But some people just never turn up. Until their rego is cancelled.
Then they suddenly want it done today. We’ve had 2 this month in exactly that situation. One Ranger and one Mondeo. Both were total nuggets that should be off the road anyway.

So I really have little sympathy for this situation.

As I mentioned, they live in the remote Kimberley region of WA.
Having to deal with a Toyota dealer for a Nissan part.
They're a bit stuck for alternatives, can't just go down the road to another car yard.
I wasn't looking for sympathy, just asking if anyone else had been in a similar situation, and what was the outcome.

are you saying they are using a Toyota dealer for the warranty job?
I know there are probably more Toyota dealers about in such a remote area but surely there's a Nissan one too?

Have been onto Nissan Customer Care, things are progressing, they've just authorised a whole lot of repairs for airbags to Nissans in remote areas, they have created a file on their car now and hopefully moving forward.

For some reason he has to take it to Toyota for the repair, they do have a Nissan shop in town, but for some reason can't do it.
I know it sounds weird to me too, but I'm getting the info from my daughter who's getting it from her boyfriend, so I'm not getting the story first hand.

Anyway, I think we're on top of it now, fingers crossed.

wouldn't surprise me. Toyotas rule supreme in those areas. not so much because they are reliable but because of the support.

I assume they have to take it to Broome, probably a long drive but that's life out there.
