Should we be worried? They say this has the potential to kill more people that WW2. Some are calling for Australia to close it's borders to avoid catastrophe. What do you all think? http://europebusines.blogspot.com/

I don't know if we could close our borders without living on bread & water.
But as the old mantra goes, "It's better to be safe.." Perhaps it'd give us some stalling time to come up with a vaccination to take the edge off of it, though such vaccines can also make healthy recipients ill. There's not a lot of hope, either. If I remember right there never was a vaccine or treatment successfully developed for H5N11 or whatever the Asian Bird Flu was called - and this is a rape & pillage mutation of that. Maybe if there had have been something for it we could use that to make something for this strain.. ...buuuuut :(. I'm really not looking forwards to a future with virilent illnesses getting more and more unstoppable and sweeping through entire continents while at the same time we are being raised with weaker and weaker immune systems. I guess it's been a while since the Spanish flu and Bubonic Plague. |

DO I think they should yes (if a case pops up closer to home), will they no. Even if a case pops up here people will still come in and out, maybe close the borders to anyone who has traveled to areas affected. Unfortunately in the current economic world closing our doors would result in lot's of lost money for the country.
But yes if it is as bad as they say they should stop people entering until a vaccine can be made or it has been succesfully contained. Also let's be honest. There was a huge bird flu epidemic not long ago but we didn't suffer. It may be worse than that but until it get's closer or I see a case here in south W.A I won't worry. I guess we'll have to wait and see over the next week or two to see how far and how fast this thing travels.I have read this has killed young and healthy people so its not just infants and the elderly who are at risk.

It's just another SARS. will do absolutely nothing other then a few children and elderly. not that that is anything trivial, it's not as epidemical as the media beats it up to be.
The NZ cases are Influenza A but they aren't 100% sure they are pig flu or whatever they are calling it.

103 now dead in Mexico. 20 cases in the US, now also found in Asia, Europe and parts of the Middle East.
This was just off the radio. But then an expert retracted the numbers saying that they don't know if the deaths were actually Swine Flu or just regular flu etc. Hmmmm... will be watching this one closely... I have family going to NZ soon for a Holiday. There is no way to stop this from coming to OZ. There must be thousands of people who have already come between NZ and Aus in these last 2 days alone. |

The bird flu was not contageous from person to person yet. Only from contact with infected birds. They were expecting it to mutate. Thats why all the hysteria there.

my 2 cents - could be serious for us, isnt yet - dont stress! What is going to happen will happen despite every precaution

im sure heaps of elderly people die of the flu all the time... thats why they all go and get their flu needle! thats probably half the cases in question but of course its been made big deal of cuz it sells papers and gets news ratings

Almost 40,000 people a year die from the flu in the united states alone. Thats around 700 a week. Do we ever hear of that?

I hadnt even heard about this until yesterday. Unless pigs fly, I think Australia with all it 's border security, should be okay... things do get through though...
I am not going to stress about it..I was more interested in the Pirates that are seizing ships! Pirates in this day and age...now that is exciting. Dont see any of them walking around with a parrot on their shoulders...Maybe the bird flu got em!!
