Why dont Ford put the Barra into the Everest and Ranger ?? Surely, thats a logical move??? Then, buyers have the choice of a diesel or petrol engine.
Keeps some people employed ?

Geelong engine plant is shutting down completely. No other plant has the tooling to keep production of the 4.0L engine going.
Not only that, it won't fit in the engine bay of either car; it is too long and too tall, plus the engineering to have it Euro 5/6 compliant hasn't been done, nor will it. |

Theyve got other large petrol engines to choose from that they havent fitted, why would an orphan engine make things suddenly different?

The biggest crime on the closing of the Australian Motor will be the loss of this engine.
There is so much more that this engine had to give, given further development, esp in Turbo form. There is still many opportunities for a large RWD car in China, The Middle East and USA especially as fuel prices have softened.

As much as I want the motor to continue, the CC of the Barra rules itself out of a huge majority of the market in China. They also have the Euro ratings as per the rest of the world, so they would need to spend big on the Barra...

I am going to miss that familiar low hum down the track. Much with Friday nights in the city, just not the same without the taxi trip home and the Falcon four speed automatic transmissions howling up through first gear

Well I've always bought second hand car that are atleast a decade old and keep them they get written off by something breaking. So for me the Barra will really be leaving sometime after 2030

There is a reason BMW have not only persisted with an I6 design, but refined and improved it to the nth degree. |

Its been a great engine for the last 14 years. so should be remembered fondly.
but there's a list of reasons why it should be consigned to history. - emissions wont meet Euro 5 - fuel economy (whilst not bad for its size its still a 4.0L) - does not adapt to transverse (one ford) - Geelong's closure will not relocate all the tooling etc - The Barra is physically huge - somebody post a picture to show - current range of Ecoboost V6 engines have it covered

Not many people are aware that a detuned barra was imported to the states as an industrial engine

Anything with double overhead cams is large.
Be interesting to see a Barra next to a Boss or Coyote engine as well.

Hello,
Sad to see the end of a great motor, it will live on as there are many around. As a low cost big strong engine, it would be a good transplant for commercial vehicles and 4 x's. |

Did they sell any in the US? Even if the motor continued to be built on in Mexico or Argentina and lived life on in a Fordson tractor, tugboat , generator , school bus or something, I would still be satisfied.

All the models that were once powered by an assortment of I6's (2.2/2.5/2.8/3.0/3.2/3.6) are now turbo 4's. Same as Ford replacing large V6, and in the US particularly, V8 engines with small EcoBoost fours and 6's.

G'day..This is very much "our engine " ..Regardless of whether the much newer Ecoboost or other engines develop more power or even more torque ..the real strength of the Barra is it's immense reliability , proven time and time again..the ability to upgrade or enhance the turbo variant especially to V8 busting performance...and the almost lazy delivery of it's power at a really usable rpm..You don't need to rev the ring out of it to get a great drive.that's why this engine will be remembered very fondly indeed..I hope to enjoy mine for years to come...Let's not forget it's predecessor either..The SOHC 4.0's reputation for amazing reliability and pretty decent performance for it's time is known by many hundreds of thousands..I'm one of them..Cheers Rod...

My argument is, yes Ford has developed advanced EcoBoost Technology with Euro 6 compliance ect ect ect.
It is amazingly efficient and powerful and I take nothing away from it. Here comes the but, Buuuuttttt. Why isn't all the EcoBoost Technology they have, applied to the I6 Motor? The hard work has been done and the research dollars spent in developing the V6 engines. You would be just applying that knowledge to a different block which is going to give you amazing results.

ecoboost is based around small capacity engines where the turbo is designed for low rev response. for instance they put a 2.0 ecoboost in the Falcon to simulate the 4L n/a barra. even the mustang only gets a 4 pot. Its time for Australia to embrace ecoboost, its the best thing Ford have got going for themselves. I hate to say this but ford should have gone with the 2.7 ecoboost for falcon & territory and dropped the barra for the last models https://media.ford.com/content/fordm...st-capable.pdf I would have purchased that over the diesel I have

coyote vs. windsor
4.6 modular (5.4 is taller AND wider again) vs windsor the windsor is kinda tiny.
