Default Mercedes king of V8's 6.3L

The new sohc V8 engine puts out 378kw and 630nm from 1500 rpm!!!!!!!!!!
Always a bit of an ambassador of merc V8's even though I've only ever worked on the 'older' variety. Still impressive non the less.

Foerdy you can buy a 'bug eyed' E55 for 70-80 grand second hand with 70-100,000 km. Performance bargain for anyone who is out for a GT or GTS. I can only dream but I know value for money when I see it.

they say it's really a 6.2 but Merc call it a 6.3... kinda like the Ford 4.9 and calling it a 5 litre - spose 100cc isnt worth worrying about, but wonder why they feel the need to be deceiving, it's probably a great motor, would love a CLK63 convertible

You bet mik, thats why I like it so much. They haven't just given in to the fickle forced induction bug like BMW, instead they've persisted in perfecting the ATMO engine. Sweet, uncompromised reliability!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its DOHC, not SOHC. And what forced induction bug like BMW? BMW doesnt have any forced induction performance cars. M3, M5, M6 are all N/A. Its Merc thats been persisting with using forced induction, V8 Supercharged, V6 Supercharged, 4cyl supercharged, V12 turboed etc

I only read the article in the age which didn't mention head configuration. Strange for such a large engine to be dohc. On the forced induction your right too, I was again just going off the article again because they mentioned turbo for M3 engine. A slight generalisation.

Maybe their trying to recall the old "6.3". What was that sedan they made around the early 80's with a 6.3 in it? If I remember correctly, it was the fastest 4 door on the planet at the time. 600 SEL 6.3?

AMG doesn't claim the V8 is a 6.3. They let the world know its a 6.2, 6208cc. The name 63 has historical significance for them, so they have put that on.

Those older M-100 engines were legendary. I'd kill for either a 300SEL 6.3 or 450SEL 6.9. If you want to know more about these engines then click here or here

Now to post some more correct specs...

6.2litre (6208cc) DOHC 32-valve V8
380kW (509bhp) @ 6800rpm
630Nm (465ftlbs) @ 5200rpm

Where did this 1500rpm crap come from? The old E55 had 700Nm @ 2650 - 4500rpm and it was supercharged!

The new engine is making 500Nm (369ftlbs) by 2000rpm and 560Nm (413ftlbs) by 3000rpm. It's incredibly torquey. But it hasn't got close to 630Nm @ 1500rpm.

It'll also be tuned down to 354kW (474bhp) in the CLK Coupe and Cabriolet, but torque stays at the same 630Nm peak.

The new Falcon GT sure could use a motor like this.

The only thing that let's these engines down is the weight of a merc these days. If you could find away to lump that engine into an older ford you'd fly.

Doesnt seem to matter how heavy they are, the E55 runs mid 12s, SL65 low 12s

Certainly quick enough for factory cars.

Where the hell did you get those specs from?

Their own site says "over 450 horsepower and 450 ftlbs," so assuming its 450hp 450ftlbs, that's 336kW 610Nm.

Specs are still not confirmed, but reports say it will have 475/475. And initial dynoing of pre production models show even more.

Ok. 475ftlbs is 644Nm btw, not 654.

It's still not confirmed though, so no one really knows. Doesn't matter what they say anyway, you can bet it will pack more, just like the old Cobra did (they claimed 390hp, but it had more like 425).

The word from AMG is that German law requires them to round up figures, so as its over 6.2 it then becomes a 6.3. Germans hey. Weird.

This is what happens when engineers are left to do what they do best without the beancounters getting involved. I've been fortunate enough to have experienced the power of the 'old' supercharged 5.5 V8 in an SL55 and i can tell you that was an absolute beast. I recon this would be even better...

Indeed they are legendary! I've had my 6.3 for a short while now and the cost of running the car is truly staggering but the whole driving experience is worth much more in the end. I still find myself in awe of how well engineered the car is, I just love it.
