When I accelerate or go up hills the interior fan cuts out for brief periods - is this normal or do I have a problem?

Perhaps someone has fitted a vacuum operated switch to the AC compressor clutch and/or blower fan to improve fuel economy. It used to be a common mod of little real benefit.
