Re: DRAG RACING AT BODANGORA, MAY 20
ROUND 1, 2007 BODANGORA TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP
BODANGORA AIRSTRIP, WELLINGTON. 20th MAY, 2007

Perfect weather, a large crowd and a good field of competitors made the opening round of Dubbo City Car Club’s annual drag racing track championship one of the best meetings held at Bodangora for a number of years. Of the 56 competitors, half were officially-numbered race cars and the others were street vehicles.

Four brackets were run, with the cars being seeded into them according to their qualifying times. The quickest eight cars made up Bracket 1, the next quickest 16 filled Bracket 2, the next 16 went to Bracket 3 and the remainder went to Bracket 4. Two 1200cc Harley Davidsons were also on hand and had a series of match races to determine the winner of the Bike bracket.

The brackets were run in a round-robin format, giving each car three races and the best two faced off for each bracket final.

The quickest car on the day was the 454 cubic inch Chev-powered LJ Torana of Adam Attard from Blacktown in Sydney. Attard put down a number of 6.2 second runs on the eighth-mile (approx 200 metres) strip and finished the day with a 6.14 then a 6.00, to be just 0.05 seconds off the track record for non-supercharged sedans. Not far behind Attard was Dave Cruickshank from Manilla, whose 407 cubic inch Chev-powered LJ Torana ran a best of 6.17 seconds.

In Bracket 1 the two finalists were Justin Callaway from Kingsvale and Peter Xiberras from Oakville, each with two wins. Callaway’s 350 Chev-powered HQ Holden took the win with a 7.06 on a 7.00-second dial-in against Xiberras’ 6.64 on a 6.60 dial-in from his Capri.

Bracket 2 saw the final come down to Wellington’s Mathew Whale and Dubbo’s Rob Gardner, each with three wins. Whale’s Holden Commodore took the win with an 8.27 on an 8.20 dial-in when Gardner’s 308 Torana went quicker than his nominated 7.35 dial-in and broke out with a 7.21.

The Bracket 3 final was between Wellington’s Bryan Forrest and Mudgee’s Alan Featherbe, each of whom had three wins. Both drivers have been regular competitors at Bodangora for many years and this was Forrest’s first bracket win, taking his XD Falcon to a 9.47 on a 9.20 dial-in win over Featherbe’s 9.23 on an 8.95 from his 6-cylinder Ford Cortina.

Cudal’s Daniel Thomas and Darren Caines from Narromine met in the Bracket 4 final, again with three wins each. Thomas’ spectacularly painted VS Holden Ute put down a strong burnout and took the win with an 8.68 on an 8.50 dial-in over Caines’ 10.30 on a 10.31 dial-in in his XF Falcon.

The Bike bracket was won by Greg Cleary over Dave Hughes, both from Dubbo, with four wins to two. The quickest time for the bikes was Cleary’s 8.20 seconds.

After the first round of the Track Championship, the pointscore leaders are Mathew Whale, Bryan Forest and Daniel Thomas on 100 points each, Rob Gardner, Alan Featherbe and Darren Caines on 95 each, Justin Callaway on 80 and Peter Xiberras on 75 points.

Round two of the Track Championship will be held on August 19th and the third round will be on September 16th.
