Default 5 spd markII 2 litre

Hi people i am wanting to get a five speed for my mk2 2 litre im starting to rebuild and i have heard that there are a few modifications i need to do to the trans tunnel to fit a five speed in properly, as i am getting rust out of the body and repainting it i dont mind welding in a new trans tunnel if i have to. Does anyone know how to properly pull off this procedure?

And while im on the subject i am wondering if anyone knows what type of 5 speed is the best for what i am doing, im not going crazy with the engine at the moment so dont need the very best yet but i just want one thats reliable and so that im not going down the freeway and not being able to talk to my passengers. Any info on this would be great.

Oh yeah i had a 4 spd manual in it in the first place not an auto so ive heard that the auto trans tunnel is slightly bigger than the manual one. Also im in perth western australia so im going to be talking to the guys at race tune if anyone knows this place. Thanks

I had a celica 5 speed in a MKII corty, the only mod I had to do is cut a slightly bigger hole where the shifter comes through, it come through the tunnel about 3 inches futher back from memory.

yeah i 90% sure you need a auto tunnel have you seen how tight the manual tunnels is around to gear box ya would even get a bees dick between them lol
and you can use a crossworth box

with some re jetting the foulcan webber will offer some better power , the 350 is better again with tuning , for serious fuel chewing and decent power duals side draughts is the go

I have celica box in my esky. I just cut out a tunnel out of an old 2ltr auto. Very easy job if you have a mig welder handy. celica clutch plate, dellow bellhousing,"DELLOW" can supply crossmember-speedo cable i think the celica yolk can be adaped to the escort tail shaft

There are a couple of different types of celica 5 spds. If you go for one, try and buy a complete conversion as buying individual components, like the bellhousing from dellow are very expensive.
Easiest option is a sierra 5-speed. Bolts straight in with minor cutting of the trans tunnel for the shifter position. Ratios aren't the best....basically the same as 4spd with an overdrive, but you can use yor existing prop-shaft, bellhousing etc.

As stated the ratios are the same with the sierra box, just dropped the revs slightly in 5th gear. If you want better accelleration you need to fit a taller diff ratio ie 3.77 or 3.89 if you are running a 2.0lt.

what about panel van differential centers? if its true they have a taller ratio, will they match up to the origonal diff? and how will that affect highway cruising? i dont want to be running at 3500 rpm all down the highway at 100 lol

Panel van would most likely have 4.11 or 3.9

A bit off subject but, I had a shortend 4cyl TE corty diff in mine, that way a you could fit a std falcon LSD centre, and still have nice 3.75 gearing. Worked well.

Yeah right.....I've owned 9 panel vans and not one has had its original diff centre.

Sorry to correct you but the panel van diffs were the same as the sedans from 1977 onwards. Before that they were 4.125 in the 1300 van only. If you upgraded to a 1600 (most commercial buyers did) they fitted a 3.54.

The 4.11 was NEVER fitted in ANY Escort, these are from anglias, hence the rarity.

PEACHY! you serious? you had a corty diff with falcon lsd center? its very amazing hearing that things like that match up, or didnt they? and how much did it cost to get the diff shortened?

Yeah mate,
The TE is the same diff centre as a falcon, I shortend the housing myself by making up a jig, got the axels shortened & re-splined at a local engineering joint, from memory, cost about $100 for the pair. Used the same crown wheel and pinion in a Falcon LSD centre. You'll need the TE 4 cyl diff though for the gearing.
Worked great !
