i'm pretty sure series 1 to 3 are the same. I think i already know the answer but are 6cyl and v8 racks the same? I have seen dealers selling 6cyl racks for $250 but want $800 for v8, i just don't get why ford throughout the last atleast 35+ years racks and boxes have been interchangeable and now its different apparently. Can someone please enlighten me.

Hi Dont know about interchangeability on the racks but speed sensitivity is a function of the pump since the XE that is the faster the pump spins the less pressure it makes so the steering is easy at parking speeds but not too light at highway speeds only with todays taller diffs and overdrives it doesnt seen to work as well as it used to, Variable ratio steering is now the ducks guts in that at straight ahead a 1/4 turn makes a small difference in direction but after that the wheels change angle at a faster rate so you dont have a twitchy car on the highway but still turns quickly into parking spots. cheers MD

6 cyl are the same, series I, II, III. The VCT has a different one and so do the V8's.
From Ford the standard AU 6 cyl is $412.00 re-manufactured and the V8 one is $497.00 and is also re-manufactured. The most expensive re-manufactured rack is the Fairlane 6 cyl and the V8 one coming in at $539.00. (different racks, same price.)

The difference between the 6 cyl and V8 appears to be the actual Rack housing. Must have something to do with the V8 sump?
