Of course the airbag didnt go off, it was a side impact.

Damn lucky that it hit where it did, any further back toward the cabin and you could kiss at least legs goodbye.

If I managed to walk away from that ... I'd be buying more than just one lottery ticket.

Made that's a hell of a hit though.

You all realize that most of that damage occured cutting them out? The roof and sides were obviously cut off.. Its a big hit no doubt but the car was opened up like a tin can by the jaws of life, not the accident.

Air bags are not magic or designed to go of after every smash.

I see cars like this and worst daily, it's a shame. There's one car that didn't wife of 5!!
I'm glad he got out ok though, nothing worst than a that.
The facts i could tell..... One just recently, two occupentd were not so lucky because the vehilce burst into flames before they could get out. Very sad indeed. It's always good to see people come out alive.

its a police car sif he got a ticket pretty sure it was chasing a car abit like this one.

Quote:
Score - Train 1 - Holden VZ SS Police Pursuit Car Nil. In pursuit of another late model Commodore suspected of being in a break and enter, Police chased said Commodore at high speed through a disused rail crossing only to beach the pursuit car on the tracks. One officer legged it after the suspects whose car was written off after landing in a culvit on the other side of the tracks whilst the remaining officer tried to call the rail control officer to stop the fast coming coal train he had spotted. To no avail, the Pacific National coal hauling loco hit the unmanned Commodore at considerable speed dragging it some distance down the track. To add insult to injury, the crimes got away on foot.

Happy to hear all officers are safe and well. I'm sure the police wiil have no trouble replacing both the cars with all the revenue they collect with speed cameras these days. :voldar02:

it was one of our cars from the South East, believe it was hit by a semi, and the driver stepped out with a couple of cuts. I think it was 7 stitches in his arm.
Five weeks ago one of my crews had an accident - sorry crash, and it was probably similar to this, not an actual head on collision, and hit a stobie pole at about 70>80 k's. They weren't injured, and again the air bags didn't deploy.
I had a talk to our Fleet Services about it, and they said that they have raised it a number of times with Holden's, and Holden's normally send down an engineer and a air bag expert and the reason the bags didn't deploy is that it isn't a head on crash, and the angle of attack when the collision occurred.
One observation of Fleet is that the cabin module is stronger and this is responsible for a lot of people walking away uninjured. In our case neither the roof or floor pan were wrinkled.
Apparently Holden's attitude is that if the occupants walked away either uninjured or with minor injuries, then the car design worked,

The revenue raised via fines etc goes to the government and they decide where to spend it.

The police could have clawed back their losses a bit by booking the train driver for failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

From what I have heard the driver was about to perform a turn and burn to pursue a speeding driver. Unfortunately for him (fortunate for the speeder) he performed (or attempted to) it in front of a semi.

This would not surprise me. Have seen a similiar accident, same circumstances, but luckily was just another car.

The top police car is a South Australian Police car. The badge can be seen on the qtr panel. Dunno where the blue one is from.
