Default $2100 deposit into my account no idea where it came from.

Just checked my bank account there was a $2100 deposit made to it today.

It doesn't say where it came from.

I'm off work for 3 months due to broken leg and am getting sickpay but the payments from my company says "deposit by "company name""

I got no idea where this money came from. is there any way of finding out lol?

I wouldnt expect that the money would stay in your account for long, banks seem to pick up on mistakes pretty quickly, especially if it is their money that has gone missing..

So spend it quickly, can they ask for it back? Their mistake IMO.

You bet they can!
They'll just take it back and put your account into arears!

I found i had $173,000.00 extra in my account one day.. the problem is it was my fathers money. Because we share the same Christian name the bank transfered it into my account by mistake...

I recall a situation a number of years ago when a very large sum of money was mistakenly put into someone's account. They noticed it, went on a spending spree and ended up going to the pokey for a little holiday because of it.

Judgement being that it was clearly not their money regardless of the error by the bank and therefore had no right to spend it. The fact that they went on and spent it was tantamount to fraud (don't recall the exact official charge).

So spend at your own peril if you don't belive the money is yours legitemately.

Far out empathy is lacking here. If you find out the money isn't yours call the bank!

A freind of mine had this happen to him, just over $3000 . He contacted the bank and told them it wasnt his , they told him many times for over a month it was his ! he withdrew the money put it into another account with the same bank . and let it sit ! After a few months the bank contacted him and asked for it back. he asked for an appology which they declined to do and basicly accused him of stealing money ! He closed his account before they could over draw it and they had absolutely no chance of touching his other account ! He did give it back after much groveling and brown nosing from the bank !

It took Westpac 3 weeks for them to realise this when a similar thing happened to me, and that was only after I had phoned them telling them to sort it out.

Then they sent me a $100 Bunnings voucher in the mail :

Get in contact with your bank and get them to follow it up, if they come back with nothing your $2100 richer.

The banks can most certainly ask for it back if you spend the banks money you dont get to keep it because its there mistake they come after you do the right thing and call the bank up and inquire it could be some old ladies money who will die if you don't give it back to her.

don't spend it for the reasons specified. I remember one story on everybody's favourite show, Today Tonight, where ATMs were spitting out $50 notes instead of $20 notes. Everyone who took advantage of this at the time got stooged by the bank shortly after...

sexr6tasy is right, Don't spend the money otherwise you will regret it, then you will be forced to pay it back, and yes, banks can make you do that

I dont really want to argue for this, because honestly I dont care..but

I wouldn't post the item until the cash was in my account, so it would be your fault. I dont see this issue?

the issue being that someone with good intentions has paid for goods or services that he won't recieve until the money is located, then -re imbursed to his account, then transferred again... Don't forget for the money to be debited to your account it means that is has been credited to someone else.. So in the above situation Joe BLow as far as he knows has paid you for the goods. Perhaps the bank made a clerical error, perhaps you supplied the wrong digit in an account number.. Happens all the time..
Do the right thing and let the bank know tomorrow

I've always been paranoid about entering one or two numbers wrong when doing bank transfers. I wouldn't spend it, not because the bank will chase you for it (AFAIK It's your money if somebody has made a mistake) but just think how you'd feel if the money was taken from you. May have been an old lady's monthly pension, you never know. Anyway, until the money has cleared (may be from a cheque account with insufficient funds) I wouldn't be spending it anyway because then you will end up in OD if the money is removed.

I'm sure if it was $2100 from some one elses account they'd be complaining to the bank straight away and the bank would track it to my account and if not the bank would have to pay them $2100 for losing their money woudln't they?

Point is its not your money...

Not every one has electronic access to their accounts. So some old lady with a passbook account (yes they still exist) might think she has money in the bank.

Your bank should have 24hr hotline... Be a decent human and call it.

I wouldnt call anyone till next business day so you can see where it was deposited and who by..... Once you have determined that it shouldnt be yours then you ring the bank, but till then you cant be sure, maybe its a special payment RE: your injury?? It could be a simple mistake whereby someones credited the wrong account number but until your sure its not yours then your best waiting to get the details tomorrow.
