Default HK Exhaust Hanger Question

I’ve only seen the transverse mufflers before. Was this (below) a period modification with the hanger bar in place of a muffler? Side not shown is a mirror. Fairly minimal silencing and full dual exhaust.

Yes, very common mod in the 70s & 80s.

Thanks - the car is a sort of time capsule; rough but the owner’s ideas seem to stop in the early eighties, your explanation makes good sense.

Exhaust u clamp looks to be in the way of suspension leaf vertical movement . Might be the photo ??
Solution would be to use strap tailpipe clamp from HQ

There’s no contact or chafing, it’s the angle of my picture that makes the pieces look closer than reality.

Hoping it gets booted soon, wasting a hoist because the radiator is out?

Correct, exhaust should not make any contact at all since it is done the same way as the HQ Monaro's, very common back in the day.
