There is a feature article on the auto XW GT in AMC mag issue 66. Charlie Smith a production car racer of the time, wanted a car that could haul the family to the track go racing and then drive home. How times have changed, car came 2nd in classE behind Kev Bartletts Alfa. He went on to do hillclimbs in it sharing with his son. The car is now restored and painted in its Bathurst livery #68E.

Maybe the new owner is a panel beater? Works on the car for a few years as a hobby and then owns a genuine restored XR GT for $15-20K?

Plenty or good XR GTs? Where and how much?

Not everyone drives a wreck into a workshop and pays to have it restored.

I work in the panel beating industry, and no good panel beater would by a car like this sight unseen..

you've made it abundantly clear that the restoration is beyond your capabilities but that doesn't mean there aren't more capable and motivated panel beaters out there willing to test their skills and be rewarded with a nice GT. it won't be easy but that will make it all the more satisfying to a truly skilled restorer

I'll leave this thread on a couple of notes..
To my way of (biased) thinking, and as a past owner of an XRGT, I reckon the real value of these things is grossly underestimated. They are our FIRST GT, Australia's FIRST homebuilt muscle car, and the beginning of the Australian built performance cars that FPV and HSV build today.
There were under 700 XRGTs built compared to over double the amount of XYs (including 300 HOs) and God knows how many XWs, XAs etc.
For the people here that reckon a smick genuine XRGT can be had for 40 grand.. Tell me where and I'll throw a 10 grand spotters fee your way!
I reckon that car was top value for the right person.
Did anyone follow XRJames's rep XRGT build? An absolute work of art, and a total credit to James... Tell me the value of James build with the above car's radiator support panel and shocker tower? (He mighta bought it!!)
Can you guys imagine what the value of a HO in similar condition providing it had the tag (XRGTs only had the number stamped, not an ID tag) would be?
A bargain, I reckon... One day, One day....

Indeed Charliewool, I also think the xr was way under rated, apart from everything else it was also our first v8 engined falcon , the little 289 was a beuty .

I never mentioned the resto is not out of my capabilities its not something I would personally take on, I have mates who have built high quality cars from scratch. I also have owned show cars. To be honest if someone has a opinion on this site the so called experts seem to cut you down. How many of you would actually put $20 - 60k plus into a resto years of your time and blood sweat and tears into crafting a high resto ? How many of you have seen what it takes to hand craft a complete front plenum on a Xr - Xt that are so far gone you have to build it from scratch. As these are one of the first places That go rotten. Just go out and price all the Gt parts chase all the Xr - Xt parts its a tedious process. I have owned a few of these classic cars and to me they are the toughest looking falcons around. The last one I owned for 8 years and put alot of time into restoring it.. So as I said goodluck to whoever bought it.
