There has to be an element of responsibility in all of this.
How often is speed the ONLY factor in an accident? I rarely see it as the reason.
Poor decision making, poor education and a lack of driving ability I would have thought should be major considerations...

I look both ways before crossing one-way streets

No I'm not cynical, I'm cautious, particularly in Brisbane where people turning up one way streets seems to happen pretty regularly. I can't speak for Melbourne, but I would assume (risky I know), that the same would probably occur there with tourists, out of towners, etc.

We don't really have that many one way streets that I can think of.

Driving the wrong way is fine as long as your doing the speed limit. Remeber speed kills, not poor driver education. /sarcasm

Maybe not related to speed zones but was talking to my partner about this and Vic Roads. Well before she met me just over 18 months ago she dated this guy for a very very short time that worked at Vic Roads, he was a road planner or road engineer. Anyways i was dumb founded when she said he didnt have a drivers licence....Just goes to show what fools control how we drive.

Myself also and even more after hitting a pedestrian driving through Geelong 10 years ago. Unfortunately he thought it would be faster not to use the pedestrian crossing but rather sprint across La Trobe tce 50mts from the crossing. Because of a truck to my right hiding him he now is disabled for the rest of his life.

That's gotta be my second biggest fear on the road, my first being a child running in front of the car. Frankly whenever I see kids near the road (like on the nature strip) I hit the anchors and slow it down to around 20km/h in fear that one of them could jump out chasing a ball or something. I know it wouldn't be my fault if I hit a child but I also know I'd never be able to reconcile it in my mind.

It was awful but there was nothing i could do, basically the only time i saw him was on impact. Five years later when he turned 21 i was handed a writ from the family trying to sue me. This is why pedestrians should take more ownership on their own safety and not the drivers through laws that will not stop the stupidity of pedestrians but infact encourage it as they feel safer.

Wow. I'm gobsmacked. How do you even begin to react to that. Such a terrible situation. My immediate thought was that I would feel anger and disbeleif, but then I'd begin to feel like a ***** for even thinking of my own feelings when what they have suffered is far worse. That's a very vicous thought cycle to get in to. I hope I never have to deal with that.

To allow pedestrians to become complacent is just asking for more accidents.
Whenever you approach a gutter, your attention should be ONLY on the traffic, not reading your facebook news feed, or talking to a friend, or whatever else.

That's just pathetic what they did, joolz. He was clearly in the wrong, I hope it worked out in your favour.
You should of counter sued him for being a moron and damaging your car. Don't know how well that would hold up in court though.

This is the reason why we need to get it into pedestrians heads that roads are a serious business and they should not be stuffing around on roads and being on them without making sure its safe first.

The road laws (and pedestrian laws) are all set out to protect us. They might annoy us but if we all followed them to the letter we'd all be (theoretically) safe. When one party ignores them do we get in strife.
One thing nags at me. For a long time we had 60km/h suburban streets and cars which had POOR braking capability. Now we have 50km/h (and 40km/h) streets and cars with great brakes (and tyres) .. have we had a huge drop in the pedestrian accident rate?

I've seen so many people trying to cross main roads that if they were hit I would have no sympathy for the pedestrian, I've seen a cyclist get hit by a car the idiot decided to go in front of moving traffic.

Maybe there needs to be a TV campaign for adults and looking before they cross.

Where are the better drivers? Or where are the intelligent pedestrians who arent spaced out in their own world when trying to cross a road?

Not to mention the huge increases in population and cars... 30yrs ago most of the roads here still had dirt shoulders and minimal traffic.

Thanks, you've raised a very good point.
In the days of hybrids running around town on battery power, there's next to little to no noise.
Surely these things pose an even bigger risk to those with Ipods and such, not hearing them coming?
I propose a new amendment to protect our vacant-minded, Ipod listening pedestrian; hybrids and girly cars to be made illegal, all cars to be fire breathing V8's or more with no resonator nor muffler. Side pipes will be standard just to warn those who get close to the kerb. Minimum capacity is to be 5 litres.
If you have a V8 which is less than 5 litres then you must attach a bunch of cowbells to the front of it.
Now that's a society a pedestrian can feel safe in.

I think you will find that all pedestrians have right of way in a car park, meaning that you were in the wrong.
