I personally think the desire to own a Aust muscle car is probably nearing its high point, all the stars are aligned, good personal wealth, good jobs, high disposable income but most importantly the demographic of successful 30-50 year olds who posseses this wealth does have the desire to own and be seen in these cars.
I think once we age, interest in these cars will decrease but never diminish, prices will remain steady and then drop but never free fall, in short they will remain valuable in some capacity but to consider then an investment would not be a good move.
My XB will go to my daughter, I have it cause I love it.

Because it is supply and demand if everyone stopped paying those prices then they will come down - simple.

I for one would not pay $10,000 for a rusted coupe that is a rolling shell missing everything and if someone does then thats their choice.

Now people on ebay need to learn that a XB GT guard is not anything different to a XB 500 guard or that a XD wiper motor is not just for ESP

What I don't like is that these prices happened overnight after I sold off about 6 or so cars that were coupes, GT's etc as I had no where to store them - that my loss now some one has my white XP coupe I sold for $4,000 and probably sell it for $20,000 how about the red xb coupe I sold with a blue slip for $8,000 now probably want $25,000 - damn it I needed a bigger shed to store them all in

All I have now is lots of pictures, lots of fond memories and a set of XB GT tags that not even $5k has been able to get them off of me.

The same trend that saw these replicas hit those figures has seen them come crashing back to earth.

given that the country has been through a major financial crisis (recession?) over the same period, wouldn't it be natural to expect this to be reflected in car prices?? is that being too logical?

prices may not rebound to what they were (they may in the long term, who could know) but i would imagine they will trend similar to the economy.

Well if they're so cheap now why not buy one, it's win/win, you get a classic and save money on tissues and we no longer hear about it.

He already said muscle cars are a pointless buy. I would like to see what new car puts that smile on your face like an old muscle car. For the record I am 24 and have had an interest in muscle cars since my teens. Lots of my friends do too. If I had the money I would buy an XY GT today! If I wanted to invest I would go with the ASX 200.

Ok heres another point of view.

Now possibly a majorty of these cars are being bought and traded by baby boomers, generally people with more money nowadays that had to miss out previously or enthusiast that enjoy vehicles that age so gracefully.

Now it might seem left of field, but i do think the age demograph has something to do with it too. Have you seen the price of a new caravan? Since more and more "experienced" people are doing things they enjoy, generally everything goes up in price too. I wouldnt believe it until i went caravan shopping with my brother in law (he works away on a gas project) and couldnt believe it.

just my 2c...

Baby boomers would generally be the base demographic for muscle cars. They have worked for a great number of years and are now looking for ways of channelling disposable income. I own a muscle car because I am a tradesman and work many hours. Lots of my friends want to own muscle cars but because of their university starting salaries, (40-50k) they generally buy second hand commodores.

Caravan prices are not driven the same way as muscle car prices. Caravans cost much more now because people basically want a home on wheels. Big TV's, fridges, ovens, and big beds to name a few. I occasionally do gas work in caravans and that work does not come cheap. The cost for a van is the cost for the materials, wages, and a profit margin.

Im not sure you can pigeon hole musclecar owners into just the baby-boomer demographic....
The 35-45 age group have probably bee the most agressive and active group in recent years for interest and purchases.

I know quite a few people in the 18-30 year age bracket that are really getting into the old cars, indeed I think their popularity in this bracket just keeps on increasing.

My only evidence is anecdotal, but it was an interesting observation (to me) at least.

Exactly, this bloke does have a fair size collection of cars of all makes and models. If my memory is good I think he has something like three sheds to house his collection.

its not only muscle cars pulling big money,???anyone read about the stocko 1969 HK KINGSWOOD (4 door)that just sold at SHANNONS for $17,000 ????
SIGN OF THE TIMES GOOD CARS COMMAND GOOD MONEY END OF STORY
as for ho selling for $820,000 well if it was mine no matter what the attachment THATS A LOTTA DOSH
I KNOW WE ALL SAY THAT "WONT SELL THAT, KEEP THAT FOREVER ECT ECT",but sometimes things out of our control force us to (IE if you needed money for heart surgery ,lung transplant ect)it has happened to all of us over time (selling our prized possesion), i will not be the first and i certainly wont be last to shed a tear seeing someone else enjoying my BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS
cars like the PHASE 3 will always comand big money,as there is not many left and every so often theres one less left (wats the last one gunna be worth)
