Some input on Russia and Vladimir Vladimirovich, from an academic and a former manager of investment funds with stakes in Russia.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-10-...-fun/101487158
https://twitter.com/samagreene/statu...un%2F101487158

(The former links to part of the latter.)

Takeaway points:
  • VVP is unlikely to go away any time soon
  • He is most likely clipping the ticket of energy exporting companies to both fund the war and his own wealth - the people who resist black funding are the ones mysteriously dying
  • Russians may, through generally passive forms of resistance to ramped-up war efforts, effectively force their own government to soften up its hardline push

The mood sure seems to have soured quite a bit on Russian state TV

https://twitter.com/JuliaDavisNews/s...5Es2_&ref_url=

This guy particularly has lost his previous vigour

https://twitter.com/JuliaDavisNews/s...5Es1_&ref_url=

I liken Russia's state TV to our Sky News, only I find their version of Peta Credlin kind of attractive

People like Putin really push my buttons. I hate bullies.

If he was in an Aussie pub, spewing his diatribe B/S. I think we know what would happen .....

I'm not an expert in Russian politics, but ....

For you more intellectual guys out there ....

What would happen if Putin was suddenly no longer around

Most likely someone from his party will replace him and forge ahead with the war with Ukraine until Russia achieves it goals with the region, this is not a one man show he has political party followers with the same ideals otherwise this war would have ended by now.

I think it may reflect a necessary change of tactic, the US is reportedly running its stockpiles of munitions down faster/further than anticipated and they remain (per their words) committed to supporting Ukraine for so long as it takes to level up. More strategic manoeuvres and less “sturm und drang” - which has been the televisual anchor to date - will be one way they can provide support ongoing.

Just been perusing a few mainstream news articles - looks like Odessa is on the rebound for now; pleasing. Less happy is to see what can only be described as fairly mindless destruction in some of the deoccupied towns, for example: https://twitter.com/maria_avdv/statu...20306793418768

I think it was John McCain from USA who said you need to think of Russia as a giant mafia business whose sole business is a gas station selling petrol and gas to the world.

Russia is a very vertical hierarchy structure, meaning the higher up you go you view those on the greasy pole underneath you as sub human to be used and spat out to further your needs.

So Putin and his merry henchmen view Russians at the bottom of the grease pole in Russia (think rural far eastern areas) as sub human to be used as he sees fit, and now it is as cannon fodder. Likewise Putin thinks of Ukrainians -(insulting term by Russians for a Ukranian being a Kokhol- think "negro" for a Ukranian), as sub human to be chewed and crushed to further his goals.

With Putin gone, the next in the vertical hierarchy will take over. Now the secret service in Russia is the new "nobility" in Russia, and I think Nikolai Platonovich Patrushev will probably take over. He will want to protect his power and that of the secret service, and protect the interests of the other Mafia bosses (Oligarchs) who in turn will give him their loyalty and support him. Like any Mafia, if you as an underling mafia boss misbehaves, the godfather orders a hit (explains all the Oligarchs falling out of high buildings in Russia recently and ongoing).

Patrushev will probably be worse than Putin, is a hard nut, hates the West, and was the architect of the attempted integration of Ukraine into Russia.

So he will likely take over, may use the change in leadership to recalibrate to give Russia time to regather itself financially and militarily to rebuild the armed forces, but his aim ultimately will not be different that the present Russian Strategy of absorbing Ukraine and other Slav countries into Russia.

The only good thing is that he is some 72 years old (but in good health) but he is grooming his son, a 42 year old Russian governor, to be the next Tsar and Furher of Russia ....

Looks like it was a large truck loaded with a massive fertilizer bomb.

Was it Ukraine or someone from Russia- FSB (Russian KGB)?

It just happened to go off when the truck was right beside the train with all the fuel tankers so I think there is a fair chance this was a suicide mission. Not powerful enough though, as the damage to the rail bridge doesn't appear to be too bad.
This attempt to cut the link between Russia and Crimea indicates to me that Ukraine has hopes of being able to retake Crimea next year.

Train was clearly stopped when the explosion went off.
If it was moving it would have either derailed or kept rolling for a km before it could stop.

That's 2 "who dunnits" lately. Nordstream explosions and now the Kerch bridge explosion....no one has claimed responsibility for either. You'd think if it was a Ukraine military strike, they'd be shouting about it.

No, this is the same as what they did when they hit the airfield in Crimea. Ukraine initially said the explosion was due to Russians smoking near fuel storage before admitting they were responsible about a month later.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-62821044
Ukraine may be reluctant to admit to the Kerch job if they didn't tell that poor truck driver what was going to happen. I think he was part of the plan but maybe not.
Nordstream is different, I can't be sure we will ever know, waiting for results from the samples the Swedes collected from the site.

Beginning to think they should just evacuate ALL civilians and let the two armies fight it out. War will probably end in 2 weeks.

They certainly move through the new channel of the Panama Canal, seen them. Incidentally it is said that China has a 99 year lease on that too.
