Couldn't expect me to stay in Wang and not go to Appin St Bakery for one of their lovely Beestings today.

Also, not quite a bakery but what’s a thread without scope creep? Was reminded of the “Haifa Food Truck” by a hand painted kerbside sign as I drove through Forestville this evening. Got to make more of an effort to sample their wares.

Food trucks are pretty much non existent in the country, though occasional one will show up at market day.

Meanwhile back at Appin St Bakery, the hungry hippo ordered 2 plain steak pies, one delicious apple turnover (to have with afternoon coffee) and the must have, semi sourdough high top.

More baked goodies only from my local great cafe.

I rate these in house made sausage rolls equal best with Euroa and Beechworth Bakery but go beyond the others simply based on the homemade relish.

Jackson's produce store are only open Wednesday to Saturday and make most of their cakes and pastries on the premises. The sausage rolls have that melt in the mouth pastry while the meat itself has carrot and a tiny amount of zucchini.

The tomato relish has an added sultana sweet taste.

Another local offering from Bowser Bean at the servo cafe.

Thought I would give this a try and was pleasantly surprised as it wasn't as bad as I would have thought.

Bowser Bean call it the "Travellers Pie" could have been a little darker in colour but what a great crispy tasting pastry with the meat not running out everywhere.

They reckon they designed it so it could be eaten while driving one handed which is true.

Quite a few brands have a 'traveller' pie.

The idea is very good. Much easier to eat.

Prices have increased quite a bit at a bakery I often go to.

The pies and sausage rolls are excellent. I rate them highly.

Their cakes are good too. I couldn’t get a shot of the small cakes cabinet; other customers were standing in front of it. They sell all the classics: vanilla slice, cream buns, apple pie with or without cream, lamingtons, cupcakes etc.

Recommended if you’re in or passing through the Cronulla / Caringbah area.

To my delight, I've recently discovered that my all time favorite bakery, that started off on Elizabeth Street in Hobart, has now branched out with franchises along the east coast.

https://banjos.com.au

And yes, I will be driving the best part of 3 hours in the not to far future with the sole intent of making sure their plain meat pies are just as good as they were 30 years ago!

Back for another pie today. The cakes were tempting, but after all the Easter chocolate I’m on a diet. My car managed to get among the lamingtons and custard tarts.

Diet, schmiet.

I see orange and almond cake on a stick sign. Is that actually what some of us know as “whole orange cake”?

I’ve never tried one of the orange and almond cakes. My interpretation of “gluten free” is “not very tasty”.

You might be surprised, and actually like it. Some recipes are a bit too “eggy” for me - it only needs to bind the rest, not bulk it up. Neighbours brought a nice homemade one as a mourning gift of food when my father died.

My mother used to make a beautiful hazelnut and dark chocolate torte, I remember it fondly. Dairy free, it was a suitable dessert for meals with meat in them. Many similar internet recipes use butter, she used vegetable oil instead.

Place looks great.

Almond flour is a great alternative. It also a good substitute for regular breadcrumb coatings.

I do chicken pieces coated in Moroccan spices and almond flour, shallow fried in Ghee. It's a little more Keto friendly for Joanie than regular coatings.

Our local cafe make a beaut Orange and Poppyseed cake.

Nice cross country drive over to Murchison to check out some baked goodies.

Lovely afternoon for a chocolate eclair and apple turnover even though I ordered a match ??

Nice pic of one of the Goulburn Valley cows DFB he so often admires.

call dibs on the narrow bridge.

Saving the turnover for after dinner. Eclair was yum. I'll get a match next time maybe.

Speaking of orange-and-almond cake…

A takeaway from Harley’s Café, Macquarie University Hospital, Macquarie Park. (Not to be confused with the Macquarie Hospital, North Ryde.) Cream was added before objection could be raised! Being natural whipped cream, it collapsed before I had this post-tea tonight.
I think the cream was a retrograde step, the cake wasn’t bad naked and coffees quick, palatable.

So, I tried the orange and almond cake from the Shearer’s Cook. The verdict is:
- it is better than I thought it would be for a gluten free cake; tasty and moist
- the portion is too small; you’d need to buy two to get a decent serving
- the vanilla slice, cream buns and apple pies are better value

Sweet wise the apple turnovers or apple cakes (BB call them Granny Smith cakes)
