120y was a tough, simple and economical car. My Mother had two. I learnt to drive in a 120y.
I had two 180B's. They handled well and cheap to run when i had no money. I could also tune and do servicing myself. Just needed a couple of tools and timing light. |

Looks identical to my neighbours VT SS. His is still really clean for its age as well. It gets babied.

Haha the good old 120y, fond memories. The manuals used to go all right but if you wanted bloody slow drive one of the autos!
Back when I was a young tacker I could get mine off the clock past 160km/hr. 2nd gear in the wet was a power house with the 155 tyres haha. I could not kill mine even doing compression lock ups etc. One time I dropped it back to 3rd at 140km/hr. When I did that it started running on 3 pots, I got home let it cool down and pulled the rocker cover and there was the problem. It had bounced a push rod, loosened off the rocker pushed it back in and away it went to terrorise the streets again.

With a determined driver, they could get moving. I remember 5 of us squeezed into an auto 120Y and my mate doing 120km/h in a residential street. He put some genuine fear into us at future times - 6 of us in an XF ute and he was driving on the footpath at one point in the backstreets, the other was an XC Cobra - 351 and a 4 speed. Why the hell did we get in? He was passing cars on Maroondah Hwy in Blackburn like they were standing still.
My sister had a late 70's Corolla - 1.3 litre with an auto. One night I was coming home, it was bucketing down, a right turn at a small roundabout and I floored it coming out and no wheelspin. It had a traction control system, it was called the engine.

that sums up the 120Y i had being my first car, i was determined to push it to its limits, however low that limit was
use to love throwing the thing around corners to get a chirp from it, until my mates who were trailing behind me one day, let me know everytime i performed this awesome manoeuvre the car would go onto 2 wheels and nearly tip over unbeknown to me haha |

My first car was a 2.0L Honda CR-V and I reckon it was almost as slow in the 0-100 dash as that 120Y.

When I was a kitchen hand as a 17 y.o first job one of the chefs owned the ugliest coloured 120 Y it was possible to have . Greeny , mustard colour . two door fastback coupe' .
Bloody hell it did some kilometres though because after he moved on I saw him still driving that 120Y several years later. Great little car they were. Our neighbour Dave didn't have a 120 Y but he did have at least 15 trouble free years out of a vinyl roofed 180B. Actually a really nice car . I can't recall the last time I saw a 120Y or 180B.. Cheers Rod. |
