I have to blame Dick Johnson for my love of the Blue oval. It's all his bloody fault that I have this bloody addiction to Ford.
Current line up..... 79 XD Fairmont Ghia 5.8 auto 80 XD ESP 5.8 4 spd 82 XE ESP 5.8 4spd 2005 BF GT 2008 Ford Ranger 4x4 2011 Ford Territory Titanium diesel & if that is not bad enough, a Ford Louisville prime mover, & my daughter has a Ford KA for her 1st car. I wonder how many Fords Dick Johnson has actually sold since 1980?? |

My family has owned Fords since day dot.
Back when it wasnt uncommon to have half acre block in Lane Cove. My Great Grandfather had one, the earliest photo we have(mid-late 1920's). I like to remind my strayed cousins of this photo

Dad owned an XD Ghia 5.8, one of his mates had an XA GT coupe with huge Aungers on it and my uncle worked for Ford PD and would come over with pre production vehicles and plenty of posters, badges and other goodies. I was never going to be anything but Ford.

My Grandad and my Dad always had Fords. From a 1949 Single Spinner side valve V8 Ute, to Consuls and Zephyr’s. But when Dad came home with a brand new XB, that was it for me. It didn’t matter that it was a bog stocker (ie. not even a Falc 500) with the 200ci six, vinyl floor coverings and not even a radio, I still loved it. I loved the shape of it and especially the “wrap around cockpit style” dash. One of my Uncles had a HQ wagon at the same time, which I hated, especially the interior and the dash design. His was only a couple of years old when the front bench collapsed! I could see the light even back then.
Just about everyone else in the family had Holdens back then and I remember all the arguments my Dad used to have with my Uncles about how Fords were better. But a cousin had a Skyview Blue XB 351 GS which I thought was the horniest car on the road, until a friend of my Dad got a Burnt Orange 351 GS Fairmont sedan. I absolutely loved that car and still remember him chirping the wheels on the gear change from 1st to 2nd every time he took off. These were the cars I used to dream of, aspire to even, so needless to say, that’s why I ended up with the XB GT. So, as far as I can tell, I’ve been a Ford man all my life. And nothing gave me greater pleasure over the 16 years I had the ED than to see a lot of my rele’s, who still have Holdens, whinging and complaining about their Commodores falling apart and things forever going wrong. They’d look at the ED and scratch their heads, wondering how a car twice or more the age of theirs was still in such good nic. Yep, it’s good to be a Ford man. |

In a word Poverty.
Not having the funds for a 430 Scuderia I could sell the 2 fords just missing the other 500K required. I guess I can make do with a blue oval a little longer.....lol....

One of my mates bought an XY Fairmont V8 when we were both 15. Car wasn't running at the time, but we spent ages with a socket set and a service manual messing with it, and eventually got it going! He still drives it today -but that's how I ended up loving fords.
Since then I helped him do an XW, another mate do an XE, and I've owned two EL xr8s and an EB SXR8.

That they are the underdogs and gave Ferrari a spanking with the GT40, and history of powerful Fords that were banned by the government. The odd one out in a crowd as i realised more people prefer holden just because of looks but me its what under the hood that counts, And last but not least the GREAT Heritage the Blue Oval has got is what gives me that tingling feeling of what a proper Ford V8 is like.

I remember as a young fella playing cricket in someones front yard in the street. There was this girl our age (12yrs old) and her older brother owned a xy GT. He used to drive up the street, stop right in front of us, rev it up for us so we would all stop what we were doing and come out and he would do one hell of a burnout. Smoke filled the street and the 351 under the hood screamed. We would get the treatment at least once a week and if we were lucky multiple times in a day.... From there I was a V8 man and he certainly waved the ford flag back in the day.
Many years later even his little sister was doing burnouts in V8s. She was hot too, she turned up to a party when we were all 18, slinky dress and no bra. Ohhhhhhh myyyyyyy ( that's for another thread) |

There are no longer any Australian Chryslers, and the Falcon is much closer to the Old 265's and 360's I used to drive. Easy torquey drive in a car that feels it could do it all day.

The Tickford body kit on the EL XR8 with the bigger spoiler, my father bought a brand new EF XR6 back in the day so naturally you start to notice them about, a few years later i spotted an Oxford green car similar to my dads but better, ever since than i've had a soft spot for them, 10 years later i finally got it
I think i might go out and look at it right now Al

Moved over from Europe as a 7yo (1981), I remember my Old Man eyeing out a Green HQ Premier 308 Tri Matic, pretty sweet car but then a Burgundy XB Fairmont with GT Options White Vynil roof and interior, 351 Auto Dual Exhaust got his attention and the rest is History. The Old Man was 45 at the time, possible mid life crisis wanting a V8.

This is going to sound rediculous but.......
When I was a little kid in Primary school I had to do a project on someone who was famous. I liked cars so my dad suggested I do it on Henry Ford. I have been a Ford fan since. By the way that was 1978 I think

POO504R, POO505R, YJT444, STW201R, IYK000......
A couple of short Ford films in the late 70s and early 80s certainly cemented things for me - 'A Little Bit Sideways', 'Coup de Grace' and of course 'The Vatanen Touch'.... |

Dad had a number of fords over the years including a GT-HO (which I didn't like, as a 4 year old it scared me), but one I remembered and loved was a 1979 fairlane with a 5.8 in it, I'm guessing it was a weezer.
As I grew up I became fairly ambivalent to cars until I did a brief stint in the retained fire brigades, and attended a few accidents. That opened my eyes, and Fords always seemed to do better in accidents compared to other cars which required cutting to get people out. I went from respecting commodores into hating them after small accidents would buckle the roof just behind the windscreen in an offset frontal crash. Then, after a long list of LWB fords (DC LTD was my favourite) I was sworn to them. My first car was a used 1988 DA LTD with 60K on the clock in white with a 3 speed auto. Whilst it wasn't cool everyone who went in it loved it for the comfort and the rear stereo. Then I went for DC, DF2, DL x 2, AU2, BA2, and finally BF LTD's and fairlanes and finally G6E-T. I'd always felt a bit of an oddball with my love of Ford until the FG, as it was the first time I had a car which others including many Asian friends respected and wanted to own, as it was a contender against their Nissans and Hondas. That and not being uber ghey makes me a ford fan.

I'm actually a "car guy"...I like anything at all.
There has been a long history of Fords in the family. My father had a 1936 Ford Prefect in the 1940's. My mothers father had a 1935 Ford V8 roadster ute from when it was about a year old, and they left it sitting on the farm under the house when he died and they sold the place in the early 1950's...it was "just an old car". I've had a few Fords, and loved them all. First up was a 1979 Cortina rally pack with a 4.1 x-flow and four speed. God that thing was a great car...a few small mods and they go like a rocket. At the same time we owned a 1970 Cortina GT. Loved it, have no idea why we sold it (we owned two cars for quite a while back then), apart from needing some money to move to Mackay for work. Then there was a gap made up of things like Geminis, Commodores, and Toranas. The next Ford was a 1978 XC-Update Fairmont GXL with 4.1, C4, and lots of good gear. Again, no idea why we sold it...we could have left it sitting in the yard and done some work fixing all the suspension bushes that needed replacing and replaced the vinyl roof. After that, another big gap filled with Commodores and a Landcruiser until we got to our current G6E. I look back at pictures and miss the hell out of each and every one of them. Some of our cars, I could have taken or left, they were just a reliable and fun means of transport with thier own charms...but I will admit that the particular Fords I have driven were all memorable. The GT after I sensibly swapped the old black-center four spoke mags on it for the very nice Globe Bathurst mags that were on the TE Cortina when we bought it... Let's see if the G6E builds the same memories and fun that I remember from the others! |
